Château d'Eck - Pessac-Léognan 2013
2*Coup de Coeur
Hachette
"Although its château, once known under the Freytets label, changed its name in the 19th century, it has retained its medieval appearance with its high walls and pepperpot towers. Its winemaking tradition is said to date back to Duke William VIII of Aquitaine (11th century). Its 2013 vintage (75% Merlot) immediately stands out for its dark, youthful color and its concentrated bouquet of black fruits, underscored by subtle oak notes with hints of spice and smoke. The palate is equally appealing: smooth on the attack, full-bodied and balanced, as complex as the nose (prune, Zan, vanilla), it reveals a rich, indulgent texture, well supported by elegant, velvety tannins that are beginning to mellow.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2017)

About the wine:

Its winemaking tradition dates back to Duke William VIII of Aquitaine (11th century). Its 2013 vintage (75% Merlot) immediately stands out for its dark, youthful color and concentrated bouquet of black fruits, underscored by subtle oak notes with hints of spice and smoke. The palate is equally enticing: smooth on the attack, full-bodied and balanced, as complex as the nose (prune, Zan, vanilla), it reveals a rich, luscious texture, well supported by elegant, velvety tannins that are beginning to mellow
About the estate:
Originally from Champagne (Côte des Blancs), the Gonet family has also built a solid reputation in the Bordeaux region: in Graves-de-Vayres with the Lesparre estates (acquired in 1986), Lathibaude, and Durand Bayle—reliable wines produced organically—as well as in Pessac-Léognan (Haut-Bacalan, Eck, Haut l’Évêque, Saint-Eugène) and in regional AOCs (La Chapelle Bordes, La Rose Videau).
