“Wow. This is very refined and full of character, with black berries, hazelnuts, cedar, and chocolate, as well as black olives. Full-bodied, velvety, and intense, with backbone and concentrated tannins. There’s real weight here. A solid finish. This could be the best wine in the appellation. Try it starting in 2024.” (James Suckling - 2019) Delivered in a wooden case for any order of 6 bottles of this wine (excluding Pickup Point delivery method)

Wine rated 16.5/20 (Benchmark wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

All the promise we sensed during the en primeur tasting has now come to fruition, with beautifully juicy fruit, a nuanced smoothness, and the floral depth that characterizes great Pomerols.

About the estate:

Édouard Labruyère (Domaine Jacques Prieur in Burgundy, JM Labruyère in Champagne and Beaujolais) has restored this fine vineyard in the northern part of the Pomerol plateau to its former glory. The 1868 Féret Guide ranked Rouget among the top five estates in the region. Recent vintages show steady progress, and 2015 should hold some excellent surprises. Combining power and elegance, Rouget is becoming more refined in the structure of its tannins, with a smooth texture that fills the mouth nicely.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

In 1992, the Labruyères—originally from Beaujolais (Moulin-à-Vent) and now owners of estates in Burgundy (Jacques Prieur) and Champagne—acquired this estate, which has been renowned since the 18th century. They have elevated it to the ranks of Pomerol’s greats, thanks to wines of remarkable consistency, produced from 18 hectares of vineyards situated on gentle slopes on the Pomerol plateau.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 92/100 (Excellent wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

The 2016 Rouget is a deep garnet purple with aromas of baked plums, dried blackberries, tobacco, and crushed stone, along with notes of beef broth, Indian spices, and bay leaves. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, firm, grainy, and rich with earthy layers, it has a savory finish.

Wine rated 18/20 (Great wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

The 2016 Rouget is almost a pure Merlot (96%). Michel Rolland, the estate’s consultant, felt that the Cabernet Franc was too powerful. One-third of the wine was aged entirely in barrels. This wine is deeply colored, incredibly creamy, rich, and full-bodied. A Pomerol with great length, fruity and full-bodied.

About the estate:

Neighboring L’Église-Clinet, Rouget has made significant strides since its acquisition by the Labruyère family. Édouard Labruyère, who oversees the estate, spares no effort in elevating the property to the pinnacle of the appellation. The work, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, is meticulous; the wine possesses a beautiful depth of flavor and undeniable richness. The château’s pricing policy remains reasonable, making Rouget a great value within the appellation, with a decidedly modern style that emphasizes body intensity and the voluptuousness of fruit that increasingly borders on overripeness. This latter characteristic seems to us to dominate the most recent vintages, to the detriment of the wines’ overall balance and the finesse of their expression. That is why we are today removing one star from the estate’s rating.
