Château Bellevue (St-Emilion)
Château Bellevue was owned by the de Conink and Pradel de Lavaux families, who also owned the long-established Libourne wine merchant Horeau-Beylot. In September 2007, Château Angélus acquired 50% of the company’s shares, with the de Lavaux family holding the other half of the estate. Together, the two families will continue the work begun in 2000 by Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt. As for the promotion of Château Bellevue’s AOC Saint-Emilion Grand Cru wine, it will be bolstered by the momentum of Château Angélus
Château Bellevue’s vineyards are located on one of the hillsides of Saint-Emilion, surrounding a hillock of hard rock that rises to an elevation of 75 meters. At their summit, they adjoin the limestone plateau, with the First Growths Beauséjour-Bécot and Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse as neighbors, while Château Angélus’s vineyards stretch out at their feet. As its name suggests, Château Bellevue and its beautiful grounds overlook the entire valley, as they are situated on Saint-Émilion’s asterian limestone plateau. All around, the vineyard’s slopes unfold, offering exceptional south and southwest exposure. At the top of the slope, the marine-origin limestone—rich in magnesium and iron—is fairly clayey. These high-quality clays, with beautiful laminated structures, become more calcareous toward the summit. As the slope descends, the limestone content decreases. Further down, the soils consist of sandy colluvial deposits that are low in limestone, siliceous, and more acidic. This diversity of soils and this range of terroirs are what give the AOC Saint-Emilion Grand Cru wines produced by Château Bellevue their complexity and nobility.
