Rated estate (2016 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)

About the estate:

At the foot of the Saint-Émilion hillside, Canon-la-Gaffelière is the flagship property of Stephan von Neipperg, who took over from his father. This German aristocrat, himself an oenologist and agronomist who graduated from Montpellier, whose family owns large vineyards in Württemberg, has become one of the most dynamic and innovative winemakers in the Libourne region. Knowing how to draw on both the power and finesse of the delicious Cabernet Franc grapes grown at the foot of the hillside, he has restored the château's wine to its full expression, perfectly deserving its new status as a Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Rated estate (2016 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

Integrating all the advances of modern, well-managed oenology, Stephan von Neiperg, with the help of Stéphane Derenoncourt, has restored the wine to its 1950s stature in less than ten years. Promoted to the rank of premier grand cru classé and certified organic in 2014 (an example that should leave a lasting impression), the estate is continuing its groundwork based on a collection of massal selections of Cabernet Franc and good choices of rootstock, "with the aim of building a vineyard for the next fifty to sixty years." The warm, early-ripening soils of the hillside vineyards are ideally suited to these Cabernet Franc grapes, which bring finesse and nobility to the wine's tannic structure. The sacrifice of some volume explains the extraordinary, yet natural, concentration of the latest vintages.
