Rating from the Hachette Wine Guide: 3*** (Exceptional Wine) + Editor’s Choice, Parker 94/100
“ A superb 2009, perfect in every way. The color is intense and brilliant, verging on black. The bouquet, rich and concentrated, elegantly blends fresh fruit and spices with a hint of chalk. The palate is, as expected of a great wine, remarkably balanced; fresh and generous at the same time, powerful and delicate, full-bodied, silky, and persistent, with just the right balance of fruit and oak: a work of art. It has great aging potential, needless to say. Note: the vineyard has been in the process of converting to organic farming since 2007.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2013). • Delivered in a wooden case for orders of 6 bottles of this wine shipped within France •

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2015 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the estate:
Taken over by a passionate American couple, Denise and Stephen Adams, Fonplégade is a superbly situated estate on the Saint-Émilion hillside, directly adjacent to Ausone. Under the direction of Éloi Jacob, the estate has made clear choices: organic viticulture and uncompromising winemaking in a modern, welcoming winery. The 2013 vintage is expected to be the estate’s most harmonious expression since the Adams’ arrival.

Rated estate (2015 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
This charming estate and its hillside bourgeois château have been revitalized by American millionaires Denise and Steve Adams. After purchasing four châteaux, they have refocused their efforts on Fonplégade and Château L’Enclos in Pomerol. Investments have been ongoing for the past five years at this estate, which is active in wine tourism. The château is being expanded with a second tower. The still-young vineyard is expected to be certified organic in 2013. This open-minded approach is also evident in the cellar, where oak barrels now sit alongside concrete tanks. The wine—charming, full-bodied, and alluring—has gained freshness and depth in the last three vintages. The tasting room, open to the general public, is one of the most elegant and popular in Saint-Émilion.

An exceptional wine from an equally exceptional vintage! It has it all: maturity and power, but also richness and velvety smoothness, with voluptuous flavors of red berries complemented by notes of sweet spices and forest floor. The body is supported by full-bodied, well-integrated tannins that express themselves vigorously in a lingering, savory finish. A top-tier GCC at a modest price. Currently well-opened and after decanting, this truly delightful 2009 paired beautifully with fine Blonde d’Aquitaine entrecôtes aged in the Bordeaux style, served with Noirmoutier potatoes sautéed in butter. Rating = 4.5.

Tasted alongside a 1995, the 2009 is a completely different wine. Almost ripe, with a lot of extraction and a touch of Michel Rolland (upon inquiry, Mr. Rolland is, in fact, a consultant to the new owners). It needs a few more years of aging.

An excellent product, though it’s still young; it needs to be aerated to bring out its full flavor.

I'm a little disappointed with this wine. Maybe it needs to be left to age for a few years in the cellar.
