"It navigates between velvet and silk, with one of the most impressive finishes among the Premier Crus! ~ B&D"

"A clean sweep for the Thienpont trio in 2019. If Larcis is the stone and Beauséjour HDL is the earth, Pavie Macquin is the sky. The nose reveals a sensual, seductive character—dare we say sexy. The extravagant, almost oriental fruit, with notes of spice and noble wood, is enhanced by an airy, musky touch. The palate is taut and vibrant. This is a perfectly ripe wine with velvety tannins, propelled by incredible energy and a vertical structure. It is the terroir in all its splendor, with a dynamic, racy signature and incredible energy. Immense. Wine rated 98/100

Rated estate (2018 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)

About wine:

Marmoréen, complex, and made for extended aging, this vintage has gained in refinement, fruit vitality, and texture compared to recent vintages. The texture ranges from velvety to silky. The fresh and deep finish is one of the most impressive among the premier crus.

About the estate:

Pavie-Macquin, located right next to Troplong-Mondot, has just been awarded Premier Grand Cru Classé status. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont know how to bring out the best in the terroir while giving it a modern twist, adapted to the tastes of today's consumers. Very full-bodied and fleshy, Pavie-Macquin wine gains in finesse and harmony with each new vintage, with the inimitable truffle flavor and mineral tension characteristic of the Pavie hillside.

Wine noted (guide 2023) 2* Favorite (Remarkable wine)

About wine:

With nearly a quarter of Cabernet in its blend, Pavie Macquin's 2019 vintage displays great strength of character, centered around perfectly ripe, intense fruit against a backdrop of smoky oak and subtle peppery notes. On the palate, it combines power and freshness with virile yet harmonious tannins, followed by a sumptuous, fruit-driven finish. A great wine with beautiful confidence, built for long-term aging. 2026-2040

Rated estate (2018 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

A new, understated reception room, made entirely of glass, allows visitors to enjoy a tasting with a breathtaking view of the village of Saint-Emilion. Pavie-Macquin retained its status as a premier grand cru classé in the latest Saint-Emilion classification in 2012. This is a fitting reward for the remarkable work carried out at the château by its manager, Nicolas Thienpont, and his advisor Stéphane Derenoncourt. Since the late 1990s, this duo has transformed the estate, drawing heavily on biodynamic principles (though not certified). Their hard work has been rewarded with a series of fantastic wines, combining magnificent fruit intensity with great depth on the palate. These wines stand out from their neighbors Pavie and Pavie Decesse with a style that is both more restrained and more supple, with deep but always very lively fruit. A sure bet well known to enthusiasts, Pavie-Macquin has not put a foot wrong in recent years.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 97/100

About wine:

On the nose, lots of roses and black fruits, such as blackberries and mulberries. Full-bodied, but tight and balanced, with real concentration and great firmness, and flawless tannins that extend throughout the wine. Minerality and persistence, with plenty of freshness. This is a very serious wine for the vintage and for the cellar. Try after 2025.

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2021 guide) 98/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About wine:

The nose is masterful and precise, beautifully refined, aromatic, complex, deep, and offers power with precision and finesse, as well as a refined limestone texture. There are notes of Sichuan pepper, blackcurrant and, more subtly, wild blackberry, combined with hints of red berries, lilac, delicate touches of fleshy plum, a sense of place, a subtle hint of star anise and a discreet hint of almost roasted herbs. The palate is fruity, balanced, elegant, racy and offers precision, juiciness, a certain density in finesse, precision, freshness, a tangy structure and a lovely finesse and power of grain. There is a lot of delicacy, mastery and "sense of place" in this wine. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy blackberry, juicy blackcurrant and, more subtly, violet, combined with hints of purple plum, wild raspberry and delicate touches of tonka bean, blueberry, licorice, vanilla and a subtle hint (in the background) of sage. The tannins are elegant, precise, and delicate. Good length.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 97/100

About wine:

Full-bodied, concentrated and loaded with ripe, extremely ripe fruit. Intoxicating notes of black fruit, flowers, spices, mocha and smoke. Long, opulent, rich and supple, it combines density, elegance, length and complexity, making it an exciting tasting experience. The finish is long and becomes more complex as it lingers. Drink between 2025 and 2047.
