Château Phélan Ségur
Château Phélan Ségur was established in the early 19th century by an Irish wine merchant based in Bordeaux: Bernard Phelan. The estate takes its name partly from its owner, who acquired the Clos de Garamey in Saint-Estèphe in 1805, and partly from the 1810 acquisition of the Ségur de Cabanac estate, which completed the wine-growing holdings.
In 1985, Xavier Gardinier took over Château Phélan Ségurwith the help of his three sons. After more than 30 years of work on the estate, the Gardinier family handed the reins to Philippe Van de Vyvere following an acquisition in January 2018.
The vineyards of Château Phélan Ségur extend across the eastern part of the commune of Saint-Estèphe, covering 90 hectares of vines planted on soil composed of pebbles and gravel coated with clayey sand resting on a limestone base. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine is blended from 47% Merlot, 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. At Château Phélan Ségur, the vineyards are managed using sustainable practices, with grapes sorted both in the vineyard and in the cellar to produce, after 14 to 18 months of aging, a wine of exceptional quality recognized and appreciated by Bordeaux enthusiasts.
Since 1986, the Château Phélan Ségur estate has also produced second wines within the same Saint-Estèphe appellation: Frank Phélan, as well as La Croix Bonis, made from selected plots planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon.
