Bâtard-Montrachet

The Bâtard-Montrachet AOC is a Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune, in the Côte-d’Or. On the label, the term “Grand Cru” must appear immediately below the name of each of these appellations in the same font size. The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru appellation covers the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.

In Montrachet, the soils are thin over hard limestone, crossed by a band of reddish marl. In Bâtard, the soils are thicker and more clayey brown limestone on the foothills. The eleven hectares of vineyards classified as Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru yield only a limited production of approximately 500 hectoliters per year.

The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru appellation produces exclusively white wines, which are made from one of Burgundy’s flagship grape varieties: Chardonnay. While nuances emerge among the different climats, they share common traits. With a golden hue and emerald highlights that turn yellow with age, the bouquet of Bâtard-Montrachet white wine evokes butter and warm croissants, ferns, dried fruits, spices, and honey. The body and bouquet are indistinguishable, as structure and harmony blend into perfect unity. Creamy and firm, dry and caressing, enveloping and deep, it possesses every grace beneath an unyielding character.
