Bâtard-Montrachet
The Bâtard-Montrachet appellation d'origine contrôlée is a Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune, in the Côte-d'Or. On the label, the Grand Cru designation must appear immediately below the name of each of these appellations in identical font size. The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru appellation covers the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet.
In Montrachet, the soils are thin on hard limestone, crossed by a band of reddish marl. In Bâtard, the soils are brown, limestone-based, thicker and more clayey towards the foothills. The eleven hectares of Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru classified vineyards allow for only a limited production of around 500 hectoliters per year.
The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru appellation produces exclusively white wines, which are made from one of Burgundy's flagship grape varieties: Chardonnay. Although there are nuances between the different climats, they share certain common characteristics. With a golden color and emerald highlights, yellowing with age, the bouquet of Bâtard-Montrachet white wine suggests butter and warm croissants, ferns, dried fruit, spices, and honey. The body and bouquet are indistinguishable, as structure and harmony blend into perfect unity. Creamy and firm, dry and caressing, enveloping and deep, it possesses all the graces beneath an unyielding character. The Bâtard-Montrachet vintages offered by Domaine Faiveley, Domaine Joseph Drouhin, and Maison Louis Jadot are worthy representatives of the appellation's excellence.
