“The 2023 Viré-Clessé was fermented and aged in large oak casks, stainless steel tanks, and demi-muids. It is more subtle on the nose: crushed white flowers mingled with crushed stone, with just a hint of wild mint in the background, and perhaps a touch of fennel as well. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a lively attack, saltier and spicier than the previous vintage, with a distant mineral note in the background. Promising. 2025–2032” (Vinous 2025)

About the estate:

The Mont Épin estate is the second estate owned by brothers Richard and Stéphane Martin, of La Croix Sénaillet in Davayé; it was acquired in 2015, and its vineyards are located around Mont Épin. It comprises 15 hectares divided into four terroirs and two appellations: Mâcon-Péronne (seven hectares) and Viré-Clessé. The estate is in the process of converting to organic farming to remain true to the same philosophy as in Davayé, and the wines are produced in two cuvées from Péronne and two from Viré-Clessé, featuring a rather charming style thanks to ripe harvests. These wines are perfect for pairing with food.
