About the estate:

Dom Pérignon is the most widely distributed and therefore best-known prestige Champagne in the world. The emotions it evokes stem first and foremost from the extraordinary quality of the hundreds of hectares of Grand Cru vineyards that form the inimitable core of its blends. The meticulous expertise of the house and its cellar master, Vincent Chaperon, achieves an ideal balance between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Both the white and rosé undergo a unique aging process, with different stages (known as “plénitudes”) that yield flavor profiles as brilliant as they are distinct. Work is underway in Hautvilliers, the birthplace of the cuvée, to restore the historic Dom Pérignon cellar—a cellar of which Dom Pérignon himself would certainly be proud.

About the wine:

2015, a hot and dry year, produced a full-bodied and complex champagne that opens with surprisingly fresh initial notes of oyster shells, followed by more generous aromas of freshly baked brioche and cocoa, before delicate floral notes (linden, honeysuckle) emerge, intertwined with hints of citrus. The palate is generous, rich, and full-bodied, yet very refined and fresh, with notes of citron, bitter orange, and a hint of saltiness. The finish is perfectly balanced.

About the estate:

The quintessential prestige champagne, named in honor of the “father of champagne.” As the steward of the vineyards and cellars at Hautvillers Abbey, Dom Pérignon—to whom tradition credits the invention of the Champagne method—demonstrated the mastery of the art of blending that defines the great cuvées. After 28 years with the house and fifteen vintages, his distant successor, Richard Geoffroy of Vertus, handed the reins in 2019 to Vincent Chaperon, who had been working alongside him for thirteen years. Dom Pérignon is always a vintage wine. Its composition remains a secret, and each vintage is a creation in its own right. All we know is that it uses Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the grand crus of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, as well as from Hautvillers (1er cru), in memory of Dom Pérignon.

Disgorged in January 2023, the Dom Pérignon 2015 offers a unique and ethereal profile with aromas of white pepper, iodine, ripe orchard fruits, toast, smoke, herbs, and spices. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, layered and structured, it is enveloping and round, with a delicately phenolic mid-palate that highlights dry, chalky extracts, and concludes with a savory, penetrating finish featuring gastronomic bitterness. This version of Dom Pérignon, while possessing the usual charm and generous character that define the label, stands out for its delicate structural austerity and a particularly phenolic profile, resulting in a remarkably linear and well-defined style that diverges sharply from the more familiar expressions of Dom Pérignon.

A pale honey color with hints of green leaves. Still very tight and restrained, as if it still needs to relax and breathe. Notes of orange peel, but less of the rich citrus cream that so often characterizes Dom Pérignon than usual.

The 2015 Dom Pérignon is outstanding. Brilliant and well-balanced, the 2015 displays tremendous energy. Notes of citrus zest, white flowers, mint, white pepper, and slate unfold on the palate. The tension and structure are magnificent, with vibrant saline notes that linger through the mid-palate and finish. This is a fine achievement in a vintage that proved challenging. I am curious to see how the 2015 will evolve in the coming years.

A highly complex champagne with a velvety tension. Aromas of coffee beans, lemon zest, burnt sugar, chalky minerality, barley candy, and tarte tatin. Fine, lively bubbles with flavors of lemon leaves, aspirin, and mirabelle plums, along with a hint of grapefruit bitterness that maintains the tension. Lively yet integrated acidity, medium body, and a toasty finish. Drink now.

The 2015 Dom Pérignon has a brilliant straw-yellow color. The nose is expressive and layered, with tropical notes of cantaloupe, peach, fresh pastry, smoky wet stones, and orange blossom. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, it offers a round, ripe yet highly detailed palate, with a soft, chalky texture. This was a very successful vintage for Dom Pérignon, producing wines that retain great clarity and detail despite the warm conditions. Best enjoyed within the next 20 years.
