Veuve Clicquot Champagne
Already a vineyard owner, Philippe Clicquot founded the eponymous wine merchant firm in 1772. His goal was already to sell beyond the country’s borders. His son François joined him in 1798.

When François died in 1805, his widow, Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, decided to take over the family business, making her one of the first female entrepreneurs in modern history. A visionary and innovator, the Veuve Clicquot produced the first known vintage in Champagne in 1810. She is also credited with inventing the riddling rack, a tool still in use today.

Until 1877, the bottles were identifiable by a seal affixed to the cork. The yellow Veuve Clicquot Ponsardinlabel then became a hallmark of the Champagne house.
In the early 20th century, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardinintroduced new production techniques and improved the quality of its cuvées, thanks in large part to significant oenological discoveries. The purchase of more than 400 chalk cellars in the Reims area contributed to improvements in the aging of the wines.

In 1986, Veuve Clicquot became part of the LVMH group.
