“Sanguin’s Carco Rouge 2009 boasts a dense color and a beautiful intensity of body, supported by firm tannins.” (Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2011 - RVF). A true driving force behind Corsican winemaking, Antoine Arena crafts authentic wines that truly reflect the identity of the local terroirs and grape varieties. Carco Rouge stands alone as a testament to the identity of the Patrimonio terroir and the Nielluccio grape variety. A very lovely wine full of character, with excellent aging potential.

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2012 guide): 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the estate:
“A meticulous winemaker and the leader of Patrimonio, Antoine Arena is convinced that the identity of Corsican wines depends on sound viticulture—particularly soil management—as well as winemaking that is as natural as possible. This noble cause also takes into account—and this is essential—the potential of native grape varieties on selected terroirs, which allows for the production of a whole range of distinctive wines, from the famous Carco to Grotte di Sol, and the most recent, Morta Maïo. While the estate may have experienced, in certain vintages, a tendency toward overripeness (with “dry” whites that had high residual sugar levels) and excessive power in the reds, the most recent vintages have achieved a more balanced and refined extraction, with greater precision and accuracy. Today, under the leadership of Antoine’s sons, Jean-Baptiste and Antoine-Marie, the estate is experiencing a new wave of momentum, driven in particular by a desire to develop oak-aged wines. An estate that has never stood still!”

A very pleasant wine to pair with cold cuts or a strong cheese—Corsican, of course!

Good—or even excellent—this wine has become much more approachable than it was a year ago, when I found it quite harsh. You always have to give wine time... And then some! A. Arena is undoubtedly the best winemaker in Corsica.
