Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2025 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, in line with what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

In 2000, Valérie Guérin took over the estate built up over the years by her father Jacques, a professor of oenology. In twenty years, he expanded it from one thousand vines to eleven hectares: thirteen plots of very old vines cultivated meticulously, low yields, very natural winemaking, and no barrel aging whatsoever. The wines are harmonious, full of flavor and freshness, and very appealing in their naturalness. The Dennis-Royal cuvées, made from Carignan vines over 75 years old, and Les-Vendangeurs-de-la-Violette are as fabulous as ever. The 2016 vintage will have to wait a little longer, as the extraction seems more intense than usual.

Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

The thousand vines of the early days have grown, through purchases and plantings, into an 11-hectare estate in the maritime region of Fitou. This estate, created in 1979 by Jacques Guérin, a former viticulture teacher at the Lycée d'Orange, has been run by his daughter Valérie since 2000.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 90/100

Rated estate (2025 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About wine:

La Cadette offers a full expression of blueberry, with notes of rosemary, while the palate still needs to develop.

About the estate:

For two decades, Valérie Guérin, recently joined by her sister Agnès, has been passionately defending this small estate in the La Palme sector (in the maritime part of the Fitou appellation). Massal selections, extremely low yields of less than 20 hl/ha (which explain the high prices), and long vatting periods are her watchwords. The result is a perfect combination of maturity and freshness in the bottle. Multiple passes through the plots produce a table rosé, three reds, and four fortified wines. These characterful cuvées have a unique concentration; while they may seem massive in their youth, they refine wonderfully with time.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on January 30, 2025

On the palate, we appreciate not only the amplitude and depth, but also the precise, full-bodied juice, with a rich, powerful aromatic palette featuring sustained red and black fruit nuances and spices, as well as a menthol note that accentuates the finesse. All this is underpinned by fairly firm but round tannins with a deliciously mellow feel. The floral aspect returns in a persistent and fresh finish. La Cadette should gain in maturity after a short period of aging. Good and enjoyable without being exciting or as expensive as the other vintages from this estate. After decanting, this very distinctive and slightly wild wine enhanced the garlic pigeons. Rating = 4.
