Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2026 guide): 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Château La Négly is one of the leading names in the Languedoc region. Situated on La Clape, on clay-limestone soil, this large 50-hectare estate also produces a garage wine, Clos des Truffiers, in Saint-Pargoire. It is owned by the Paux-Rosset family. La Négly offers a wide range of wines; the cuvées all share a unique minty freshness, and we recommend them without reservation. L’Ancely, dedicated to Mourvèdre, serves as the bridge between this range and the more ambitious cuvées—produced in limited quantities and sought after by affluent international wine enthusiasts. The estate’s current success spans all three wine types, which is quite rare.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

On the southern slope of the Clape massif, summer sea breezes temper the intensity of the sun and the tramontane wind. After settling here in 1996, Jean Paux-Rosset replanted the vineyard, which now covers 100 hectares and which he runs with his sons Bastien and Mario, assisted by Claude Gros, a renowned oenologist from Narbonne.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 91/100

About the wine:

An aromatic bouquet of black raspberry, red cherry, rhubarb, and fig skin fills the nose. On the palate, robust black fruit, bread dough, and iron-like tannins patiently await release.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 16/20

About the wine:

Black cherry fruit, velvety chocolate tannins. An abundance of cherry juice. Saturated with juice. Licorice, thyme, and lavender on the slightly astringent finish. Fresh and surprisingly transparent for such a great wine with Mourvèdre and Syrah in the blend. A warm finish.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on September 17, 2025

Favorite this highly seductive southern red, which offers a full-bodied, deep, and richly structured palate of savory flavors of ripe black fruits, infused with warm spices and subtle notes of smoke and cocoa. In addition to its almost thick density, the texture is creamy and smooth, enhanced by delicate, silky tannins that lead to an extraordinarily long finish, marked by a slight mineral note. An incredible price for this little southern wine that has all the makings of a great one. Paired with honey-glazed pork ribs and barbecue sauce, braised over vine shoots. Rating = 4.2.
