Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2025 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

In 2000, Valérie Guérin took over the estate that her father, Jacques—a professor of oenology—had built up over the years. Under his stewardship, the estate grew from 1,000 vines to 11 hectares in twenty years: thirteen plots of very old vines cultivated with meticulous care, low yields, a very natural winemaking process, and absolutely no barrel aging. The wines, harmonious, full of flavor and freshness, are very appealing for their natural character. The cuvées “Dennis-Royal,” made from Carignan vines over 75 years old, and “Les-Vendangeurs-de-la-Violette” are as fabulous as ever. The 2016 vintage will require a bit more patience, as the extraction seems more intense than usual.

Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The initial 1,000 vines have, through a series of acquisitions and plantings, grown into an 11-hectare estate in the coastal region of Fitou. Founded in 1979 by Jacques Guérin, a former viticulture teacher at the high school in Orange, the estate has been run by his daughter Valérie since 2000.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2025 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

Pure Muscat character—floral and elegant—with 100 g of sugar per liter that is beautifully integrated, creating an airy sensation.

About the estate:

For two decades, Valérie Guérin—recently joined by her sister Agnès—has passionately championed this small estate in the La Palme area (in the coastal part of the Fitou appellation). Massal selections, extremely low yields of less than 20 hl/ha (which explain the high prices), and long vatting periods are her guiding principles. The result in the bottle is the perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. Multiple harvests from the vineyards yield a table rosé, three reds, and four fortified wines. These distinctive vintages boast a unique concentration; while they may seem bold in their youth, they age beautifully over time.
