Kefraya Castle
The de Bustros family, owners of a vast agricultural estate in the Bekaa Valley, built a castle on a hill there primarily to monitor troop movements in the late 1940s. Michel de Bustros saw it as an exceptional site for viticulture and undertook extensive work to establish the Kefraya vineyard on the estate’s hillsides. Thus, the first vines were planted in 1951, and it was not until 1979, in the midst of the Lebanese Civil War, that the first vintage of Château Kefraya was produced.

The Château Kefraya vineyard spans nearly 300 hectares of terraced hillsides at the foot of Mount Barouk. It comprises a wide variety of terroirs: clay-limestone, stony, clay-loam, and sandy. The vines enjoy generous sun exposure and are not irrigated, which limits yields to an average of 35 hl/ha. Committed to expressing the terroir, Château Kefraya practices sustainable viticulture.

Many grape varieties are planted at Kefraya: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier, Carménère, Marselan, and Muscat à petits grains. This allows for the creation of rich, harmonious, and balanced blends—a philosophy established by Michel de Bustos (who passed away in 2016).
