Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 15.5/20 (2015 vintage) (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2024 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)
About the estate:
Clément Nicolas is now taking over from his parents Christine and Eric and making the most of the new gravity-fed winery. This estate is the benchmark for Sarthe wines, continuing to position them at the highest level. Their management of the 15-hectare vineyard, using organic and biodynamic methods, is flawless. These original wines are well worth their prices, ranging from €20 to €42.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
In the mid-1990s, Éric and Christine Nicolas were the first to boldly take up the torch for Sarthe wines, which had fallen into obscurity. With the same sensitivity and rigor, their son Clément joined them at the family estate in Lhomme. Their vintages showcase the immense potential of these understated terroirs. The reasons for their success are the same as everywhere else in France: elite, biodynamic viticulture and vinification that is as natural as possible, but meticulous. The Coteaux-du-Loir Vieilles Vignes Éparses perfectly illustrates the unique, elegantly austere character of these wines, which develop an extraordinary saline sensation after a few years in the bottle. Calligramme, made from 70-year-old vines, is another monument, oscillating between dry and semi-dry depending on the vintage, which every lover of great Loire whites should have in their cellar. With their high level of concentration, the Pineau d'Aunis reds are among the most accomplished of this grape variety, with one exception this year.
