"All refinement and indulgence"

"In 2023, Cabernet Franc offers more substance, while expressing a particular floral character and a medium-bodied balance, especially here, where we sense the expression of an al dente grape, reminiscent of Franc de Pied, digestible, supple, and lively, whose balance is reminiscent of a white wine." (Le Guide RVF 2026).

Wine rated (2026 guide) 96/100

Rated estate (2026 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)

About the estate:

Thierry Germain has made his estate a benchmark and a leading address for biodynamics and great Loire wines, while successfully passing on his passion to his children, Jeanne and Louis, who now work with him. The dense, energetic wines showcase the magnificent limestone terroirs of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, particularly the Clos Romans and Clos de L'Echelier single vineyard wines. Low yields result in beautifully concentrated reds that are silky and long on the palate.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 92/100

Rated estate (2026 guide) 3 stars (These represent the excellence of French vineyards. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical moment.)

About wine:

In 2023, Cabernet Franc offers more substance, while expressing a particular floral character and a medium-bodied balance, especially here, where we sense the expression of an al dente grape, reminiscent of Franc de Pied, digestible, supple, and lively, whose balance is reminiscent of a white wine.

About the estate:

The charismatic Thierry Germain has developed a unique stylistic approach to Saumur-Champigny and Saumur whites. The significant work undertaken in the vineyards (using biodynamic methods, some plowed by horse) is evident even in the estate's simplest cuvée. The latest white vintages reveal a remarkable saline brightness, going to the heart of the chalky expression of Chenin on tuffeau. They thrill the taste buds and the body! The quest for crispness and precision is undeniable in the reds, which can have a delightful floral quality. However, we are convinced that they could reveal a more velvety, graceful and mature balance of Loire Cabernet Franc, in the style of La Marginale, whose vertical tasting in April 2024 confirmed its aging potential.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100

About wine:

Franc de Pied 2023 comes from ungrafted vines planted on sandy soils. Probably the most daring of the Roches Neuves wines, it has a sober but assured structure and presence. It offers impressive weight and density. The tannins are present, coating the palate with a fine, grainy texture, but without being overpowering. Notes of violet, bay leaf, and black olive mingle with aromas of black fruit in a long finish.
