Coulée de Serrant - Nicolas Joly

Domaine de la Coulée de Serrant produces what is arguably one of the greatest white wines in the world. Nicolas Joly, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture, tends his vineyard on legendary slopes with passion and care, eschewing the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Coulée de Serrant is a top-tier estate and a true flagship of Loire Valley wines.

Coulée de Serrant is itself a controlled appellation covering just 7 hectares. Located on very steep slopes overlooking the Loire, the Chenin-varietal vines have an average age of 35 to 40 years. The oldest, over 80 years old, provide the wood used to grow new vines that carry the uniqueness of the terroir. Partly cultivated by horse or by hand, the average yield is 20–25 hectoliters per hectare. The very thin soil rests on a bed of sloping red schist that perfectly drains the Savennières Coulée de Serrant vineyards. The slopes face primarily south/southeast. The harvest takes place in five stages over three to four weeks to achieve the richest possible color and the most pronounced botrytis influence. The Nicolas Joly estate also offers Savennières Roche aux Moines, whose quality is on par with the other vintages.
