Wine rated (2021 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

This Vouvray opens with mineral aromas intertwined with notes of dried fruit and candied citrus, while hinting at a palate that is both smooth and taut.

About the estate:

In Vouvray, Vincent Carême has established his brilliant style. Pure, precise, and luminous, the wines are priced between 15 and 20 euros and offer excellent value for money. The latest vintages are among the most accomplished of the estate and the appellation. Always noteworthy, the quality of the sparkling wines is worth mentioning, and the non-dosage brut is superb. You should place your order right away.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 92/100

Rated estate (2026 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

The powerful body of this wine and its bitter notes on the finish need time to mellow in the bottle. Its length reflects the complexity of the terroir. Save it for later.

About the estate:

The unassuming Vincent Carême, who also produces Steen (the local name for Chenin) in South Africa under the Terre Brûlée label (40,000 bottles per year), is now one of the leading figures in the Vouvray appellation. Across 17.5 hectares of Chenin planted on the flinty clay soils of Vernou-sur-Brenne and Nozay, meticulous organic farming (certified in 2007) yields healthy, vibrant grapes in the cellar. This forty-something winemaker is moving toward increasingly dry wines, yet his Le Peu Morier and Tendre wines energetically incorporate residual sugars, offering salty and savory whites. His standards are pushed even further with the introduction of biodynamic practices; aging in old barrels (400 L) is becoming increasingly precise. These wines are meticulously crafted.

Review and comment by Mr. DOMINIQUE E. Published on March 28, 2021

Tasted after the crémant from the same estate. We were immediately captivated by a pear-and-brioche nose that made our mouths water...... but then—crash—on the palate, the wine’s structure falls apart; the Chenin lacks structure and liveliness, with a finish marked by a rather cloying bitterness. It’s a far cry from the craftsmanship found at Domaine Huet or Clos Naudin. The crémant is still acceptable, though.
