About the wine:

The 2017 Cedro do Noval, bottled about three weeks before this tasting, is a blend of 55% Touriga Nacional, 25% Syrah, 15% Touriga Franca, and the remainder Tinto Cão, all aged for 14 months in French oak barrels of varying ages. (This Syrah, of course, means it bears the Duriense regional designation, not the Douro DOC.) Fresh, silky, and subtly concentrated, it reveals its fruity essence on the palate. The Syrah contributes its typical characteristics but not gamey notes. This is yet another red that seems to benefit from the 2017 vintage. The fresh, fruity character makes it both smooth and flavorful. It also has ripe tannins. It has aging potential, but feel free to drink it as soon as it’s released. This wine may not be available on the market until 2020.

Medium-deep to deep ruby color with purple highlights. On the nose, dark aromas: dark fruit, coffee, ink. Still very compact overall. On the palate, it’s more of the same. Dark notes and concentrated power. This needs time, just like a Vintage Port. Not much to enjoy right now, but you can taste the potential. Let it age for 6 years and then taste it again. Score: 15.5+ /20

A very well-balanced wine, with silky, refined tannins, lovely concentration with just the right amount of extraction, and well-integrated oak... a true delight in a beautiful bottle.
