“‘Charming and delicious’ (James Suckling)”

“The 2023 Côtes de Provence Rosé Garrus is a true success, offering an alluring bouquet of pomegranate, spices, ripe orchard fruits, and red berries, delicately framed by subtle woody notes. Medium- to full-bodied, lively, and full-flavored, it is complex and textured, with a fruity core and a touch of freshness that enhances the finish. It is a structured and sophisticated rosé that can age gracefully, promising to reveal even greater complexity over the next 4 to 5 years.” (Wine Advocate 2025)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2018 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the estate:

This estate has been owned since 2006 by Sacha Lichine, the former owner of Château Prieuré-Lichine in Margaux. He has taken a hands-on approach to winemaking, working with Patrick Léon (formerly of Mouton-Rothschild) to produce wines of exceptional quality. Their Garrus cuvée is likely the most expensive Provence rosé on the market.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

Made from a single vineyard of very old vines, some of which are nearly a century old, Garrus is the flagship wine of Domaine Esclan. Although it is still very young, I feel that, just like Les Clans, it has reached new heights in the 2023 vintage. It is very fragrant and floral on the nose, a bit prettier, more elegant, and more precise than Les Clans 2023, while the palate displays fascinating purity and tension. It offers succulent, fragrant aromas of white peach and enticing salinity and minerality. The oak is well-integrated and the wine is still very tight, but its density, energy, length, and refinement are undeniable. If you drink it this year (2025), give it time to open up in the glass or consider decanting it.

Rated estate (2018 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

A renowned match manufacturer in Marseille during the 1850s, Joseph Toussaint Caussemille was one of the many owners of Château d'Esclans and gave his name to this estate, which is dominated by a 19th-century building inspired by Tuscan villas and built on the ruins of a medieval castle. Sacha Lichine, son of the late Alexis Lichine, former owner of Château Prieuré-Lichine, took over this 267-hectare estate (including 44 hectares of vineyards) in 2006; it is renowned for its oak-aged rosés.

About the wine:

Pale salmon pink. This wine has a pleasant and intriguing nose, with a hint of honeysuckle and well-integrated acidity. Herbal notes and just enough freshness. I could see myself enjoying it with a meal, though I find it a bit too heavy (both the wine and the bottle) to serve as an aperitif. Good length. Well done! (JR)

James Suckling

Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A splendid rosé, intense and crisp. It reveals notes of lemon tea, melon, fresh apricots, wild herbs, and subtle mineral hints. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, with lively acidity. Alluring and succulent, it offers a cascade of tangy fruits on the palate, harmoniously balanced, that linger into a long finish. Enjoy now or celller.
