"Harmonious and appealing, this wine is a sure bet!"

“Sensual and fragrant, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine de la Janasse is a resounding success, especially when compared to the 2022 vintage, which is more robust and reserved. Bursting with aromas of violets, spring flowers, black cherries, and garrigue, it has a medium- to full-bodied profile that is both dense and lively, with a fleshy, fruity core framed by velvety tannins and a smooth, harmonious texture. The finish is long, harmonious, and delicately spicy. Made from a blend of 65% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, it was aged for 12 months in a combination of large oak casks and used barrels (20%), offering a beautifully integrated and balanced expression of the vintage.” (Wine Advocate 2025)

Wine rated (2027 guide) 96/100

Rated estate (2024 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

Located on Courthézon’s finest terroirs, the Domaine de la Janasse—the pride of the Sabon family—has stood out for over 40 years as one of the appellation’s leading producers. Christophe Sabon produces Côtes-du-Rhône wines of the highest caliber, with rare depth. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are expressed through various cuvées: Chaupin, from a cooler terroir with a distinctly Burgundian character, and the Vieilles-Vignes cuvée, which is sunnier and more refined. Finally, the whites—though often overshadowed by the reds—are just as highly recommended. The entire range is impeccable, and the top cuvées rank among the appellation’s finest.

About the estate:

A regular in the Guide, often highly ranked for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, and IGP wines. A 90-hectare vineyard spread across multiple plots, managed by Christophe Sabon and his sister Isabelle, the children of Aimé Sabon, who founded the estate in 1973. The estate was expanded in 2015 with the purchase of Clos Saint-Antonin and its 15 hectares of vineyards in the town of Jonquières.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 93/100

Rated Estate (2024 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, bursting with smooth fruit and fine texture, is already delicious.

About the estate:

This large estate, which has belonged to the Sabon family for generations, ranks among the elite of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are primarily located in the commune of Courthézon, with a variety of plots and soil types reflected in the estate’s various cuvées. The estate also produces splendid (and high-volume) Côtes-du-Rhône wines from vineyards adjacent to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. With often very high levels of ripeness, the wines are opulent in style, sometimes a bit too warm in sunny vintages. On the other hand, the tannins and textures are always exceptionally refined. In recent vintages, the wines have been less focused on richness and have become slightly more approachable.

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Spectator)

About the wine:

It offers aromas of ripe cherry and lovely fruit, with a powerful and warm profile, against a backdrop of crushed graphite. It displays impressive purity and smoothness, with a refined texture and notes of dried herbs, leading to a fluid and elegant finish that reveals subtle depth and a lovely, lingering aftertaste. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. Best enjoyed now through 2035.

Rated winery (2023 guide) Recommended

About the wine:

With its spicy notes and aromas of dried fruit, it’s safe to say that this wine offers the aromas and flavors of fruitcake. It is, however, quite dry, without being overpowering or too high in alcohol, which prevents it from tasting overripe. A satisfying balance between the wine’s fullness and its warm, moderately dry tannins. A long and harmonious finish.

About the wine:

Aromas of juicy red and black berries, pepper, leather, and savory garrigue characterize the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a blend composed of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, partially destemmed and aged for 12 months—80% in large oak casks and 20% in used barrels. Medium-bodied, it offers a concentrated and elegant palate, ripe and refined tannins, and exceptional length on the finish. Beautifully balanced, with remarkable purity and elegance, it will age for 15 to 20 years in cool cellars. Best enjoyed between 2025 and 2045.
