Domaine de Poulvarel - Costières de Nîmes Les Perrottes 2023
2*Coup de Coeur
Hachette
“A real treat!”
“This wine is made from 60-year-old vines, with half of the grapes fermented using carbonic maceration. After 12 months in barrels and tanks, it offers a nose of vanilla and cocoa that envelops the dark fruit. The palate is rich yet fresh, supported by velvety, perfectly extracted tannins and noble oak notes with bittersweet flavors of dark chocolate and paprika. Definitely a wine for aging.” (Le Guide Hachette 2026)

Bettane & Desseauve
Winery rated 1*Star (A high-quality, recommended production that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the estate:
In 2004, Pascal Glas decided to take over the family vineyards after having produced wine for more than twenty years in cooperative wineries in the south of France. Located on the northwestern edge of the Costières de Nîmes appellation, he crafts straightforward, honest wines with exemplary balance and purity of fruit. The wines are refreshing, with beautiful depth of fruit, yet never overpowering.

About the estate:
Pascal Glas and his wife Élisabeth took over the family estate in 2004 after the Sernhac cooperative closed. Today, they cultivate a 45-hectare vineyard and produce Costières-de-Nîmes wines—which are regularly featured in these pages—as well as an IGP. Certified HVE since 2014, the estate is in the process of converting to organic farming.

A full-bodied winter wine, best enjoyed with venison—specifically doe—though a bit heavy, much like the old CDRs from the ’80s. Some winemakers are now producing finer, more balanced wines. I’m a little disappointed; I’ll have to move on to something else. The entry-level wine is more approachable.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 12/20/2025
A blend of old vines combined with excellent aging reveals a rich, generous character on the palate—juicy and beautifully full-bodied, with ripe, spicy black fruit notes, wrapped in velvety, enveloping tannins. Offers great value for the price. As always, it pairs beautifully with pork chops marinated in sage and rosemary, served with a Provençal ratatouille. Rating = 4.2.
