Château La Borie - Côtes du Rhône Villages Suze-La-Rousse Syrah 2023

“Voted Best Wine of the Rhône Valley (Decanter World Wine Awards 2025)”
"One thing is certain: this Syrah-based wine (with just a touch of Grenache) is an exceptional find. With its intense black-red color, it releases beautifully spicy aromas reminiscent of sizzling bacon—aromas that wouldn’t be out of place after a hot summer in Cornas. The additional aromatic notes of orange blossom and citrus peel, however, suggest southern origins. It is magnificent on the palate: full-bodied and exuberant, sumptuous and rich, with notes of sweet, tender fruit to savor—undoubtedly a wine from the south. Don’t miss the orange aromas that delightfully unfold on the palate either. " (Best in Show, Decanter World Wine Awards 2025)

About the wine:
Côtes du Rhône-Villages red wines labeled with the village name have earned only three spots over the years in our Best in Show selection, and this is the second time Suze-La-Rousse has made the list. (Plan de Dieu was the third.) Does this indicate a distinctive terroir that could eventually allow Suze-La-Rousse to achieve cru status, as seven of its peers have done over the past half-century? Let’s see. What is certain is that this Syrah-based wine (with just a touch of Grenache) is an exceptional find: with an intense black-red color, it exudes beautifully spicy aromas, reminiscent of sizzling bacon, which wouldn’t be out of place after a hot summer in Cornas. The additional aromatic notes of orange blossom and citrus peel, however, suggest southern origins. It is magnificent on the palate: full-bodied and exuberant, sumptuous and rich, with notes of sweet, tender fruit to savor—most certainly a southern wine. Don’t miss the orange aromas that delightfully unfold on the palate either.

After reading all the rave reviews, I was eager to try this Gem. It really is very good, but the strength isn't quite under control yet.

Discover this well-structured cuvée, which boasts a lush, opulent, and flamboyant profile, delivering a full-bodied and extremely fruity palate that makes it indulgent, with subtle spicy and herbal notes that render it relatively more approachable. The tannins are firm but not harsh; they are silky and carried by a pleasant, licorice-like freshness. It can be cellared for a while. Well-priced and a perfect pairing for a Provençal-style lamb navarin. Rating = 4.

Medium-deep cherry red color with a purple glow. Nose: fresh, crushed red and black fruit, white pepper and other spices, forest floor, and green herbs. On the palate, juicy blackberry and blackcurrant fruit and juicy plums, great concentration, and a firm, meaty structure with silky-smooth, fine-grained tannins. Iron and meat juices. The Syrah comes through beautifully. A magnificent glass of Southern Rhône where Syrah takes center stage. Aging potential. Score: 16+/20
