Mas de Libian
A family-owned estate since 1670, the vineyards at Libian have always been cultivated. This farmhouse is located in St. Marcel d’Ardèche on the right bank of the Rhône, at the very end of the Ardèche Gorges. Winemaking became the main activity in 1970 with the construction of a winery by Jean-Pierre Thibon. Organic farming—including tilling the soil, hand-thinning in the spring, and the use of copper and sulfur—has always been practiced here, and Mas de Libian reached a milestone in 2005 with the estate’s official certification as biodynamic. Today, two of the family’s daughters run Mas de Libian: Hélène and her husband, and Catherine—not to mention their parents and Nestor and Bambi, the lovely Franc-Comtois dogs!
The Mas de Libian vineyard now spans 25 hectares, where Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Viognier, Clairette, and Roussanne thrive. This work, carried out in the spirit of traditional winemaking, yields several wines—one white, one rosé, and four reds—all classified under the Côtes du Rhône AOC. These wines complement each other beautifully, allowing Libian to thrive and carry on its legacy.
