"A tribute to Stéphane's father with this exceptional vintage"

Produced since the 1989 vintage—when Stéphane’s father became a grandfather—this cuvée is made from the estate’s finest old Syrah vines growing on granite-rich hillsides. With a deep ruby color, this wine reveals intense aromas of red fruit and violet, as well as spicy notes, along with hints of licorice and vanilla. On the palate, it is elegant and long-finishing, with a solid tannic structure and well-integrated tannins.

Rated estate (2020 guide): 3*Stars (High-quality production that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

In just a few vintages, Stéphane Montez has established himself as a leading winemaker in the northernmost part of the valley, within the Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Côte Rôtie appellations. Grapes harvested when fully ripe—sometimes even a little too ripe—produce wines with great power and intensity on the palate. Unfortunately, the estate did not present its wines at our tastings this year.

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Award-Winning Wines (This producer's wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The estate’s origins date back to the 16th century; the Montez family has been growing grapes there since 1741. Stéphane Montez, who took over from his father Antoine in 1999, represents the ninth generation of winemakers. Today, he manages a 40-hectare vineyard in the process of converting to organic farming (Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and IGP), located on the heights of Chavanay at an elevation of 320 meters. A sure bet in the northern valley

Wine rated (2026 guide) 93/100 (2022 vintage)

Rated Winery (2023 Guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or high-quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these wineries)

About the estate:

Since 1997, Stéphane Montez has been cultivating a vineyard planted on beautiful hillsides located less than 2 kilometers from his winery. This rare estate produces 40% white wines. As for reds, the estate owns a superb plot of old Syrah vines in Saint-Joseph, which produces a generous and delicious Cuvée du Papy. The Côte-Rôtie wines are becoming increasingly well-crafted, thanks to refined aging techniques.
