"At the crossroads between Syrah from the Northern Rhône and Syrah from the New World"

A deep, dark color that reveals, right from the first whiff, notes of very ripe black fruits (blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry), followed by a medley of spices and garrigue aromas (pepper, cinnamon, licorice, thyme, rosemary). On the palate, it displays ripe fruit and a velvety texture. A bottle that truly represents the Roussillon region!

Wine noted (guide 2024) 2* Stars (Vintage 2021) (Remarkable wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

South of Perpignan, Charles Perez has been running his estate since 2008 in the hamlet of Nyls, in the Aspres region: 25 hectares of organic vineyards spread across three hills within a 110-hectare estate. For his reds, his blends feature Syrah prominently. This prominent figure in the wine region is “sketched” by a different artist each year to illustrate his labels. The same goes for his family members. The Catalan Mouton Rothschild, so to speak!

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on June 8, 2025

Behind its cheerful and approachable appearance, “Charles” actually reveals an incredibly dense, deep, almost heady profile. On the palate, it unfolds with a full-bodied, velvety texture marked by lovely freshness, along with a very rich expression of spiced, macerated red and black fruits, set against a backdrop of cocoa notes. Supported by an imposing, even robust tannic structure, the wine comes together in a tight, intense finish, enhanced by a slightly salty hint. This wine of character is clearly meant to accompany hearty dishes, such as a traditional cassoulet, or game dishes like roast venison with green pepper sauce. Rating = 3.8.
