"Delicious!"

"A flavorful, well-composed red with aromas of black cherry, redcurrant, warm herbs, and a hint of black pepper. It is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Refined, yet lively and intense on the palate. Juicy and concentrated finish with good length." (James Suckling 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2021 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Philippe Modat compensated for the thanklessness of his job as a clerk at the Commercial Court by reviving his wild gneiss lands in Caramany, with the help of his tireless manager Laurent Abet. Today, his sons Quentin and Louis have taken over, with many projects in mind. Impeccable viticulture, respectful winemaking, and the development of a range of wines: everything is falling into place to help the estate grow and evolve. Promising wines, a cellar full of ideas, and a welcome breath of fresh air blowing through an appellation that sorely needs it.

About the estate:

Of Catalan origin, Philippe Modat, a magistrate, is a knowledgeable wine lover, like his father, who also became a winegrower. This passion led to the creation of an estate in the Agly Valley in 2006: 27 hectares of vines on a plateau at an altitude of 300 meters, in conversion to organic farming since 2011 (8 hectares biodynamic) and an ecologically designed cellar equipped with photovoltaic cells, inaugurated in 2008.

About wine:

Carignan and Syrah are vinified as whole clusters. This combination, along with gentle extraction techniques, results in a wine with lovely viscosity and juicy fruit flavors of fresh fig and blueberry. This red offers graceful proportions, supple tannins, and a balanced profile. (Magazine July-August 2025)

Wine rated (2024 guide) 16,5/20

About wine:

Aromas of cherry sorbet and lavender talcum powder. Bright, juicy, crimson fruit. Plump plums and pomegranate. Tannins scribble through the fruit. So juicy that it's thirst-quenching. The kind of red that you can even drink on a hot day, perhaps slightly chilled. Lots of va-va-voom.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on March 4, 2025

It's hard to resist such a charming Petit ModAt'mour, which in 2023 still boasts a splendid basket of tart red fruits and blood oranges, enhanced by a pinch of sweet spices and a few toasted notes. The texture is both wonderfully juicy and intensely flavorful, harmonious and particularly appealing with its silky texture and underlying freshness, as well as its delicate and extremely savory finish. When the warm weather arrives, this lovely wine will be the perfect accompaniment to a Catalan-style tuna salad followed by the first grilled red meats seasoned with garrigue herbs. Rating = 4.1.
