Van Volxem
Located in the historic center of Wiltingen/Saar, the Van Volxem estate was built on the ruins of a Roman villa, remnants of which can still be found in the park. The vineyards, some of which were planted by the Romans as early as the 3rd century on the best schist slopes of the Saar, are among the oldest steep-slope vineyards. Rediscovered and restored by monks in the 11th century, the estate was cultivated by the Jesuit Order starting in the 16th century and transformed into a wine-producing monastery in 1743.
The rise of Mosel and Saar wines, particularly in the luxury segment, ushered in the Golden Age of Van Volxem, whose “nectars” began appearing on wine lists around the world.
Four generations of the Van Volxem family succeeded one another before the estate was sold in 2000 to Roman Niewodniczanski. Since then, the estate has been renovated in accordance with the requirements of the “Monuments and Sites” authority, and the Van Volxem vineyard has been expanded through the acquisition of numerous plots. Dominik Völk, who has been the estate’s director since 2004, is striving to reconnect with the estate’s rich history and aims to build an international reputation for Van Volxem’s white wines.
