Wines from Germany
TheGermany is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in the world. It is divided into 13 regions: Ahr, Baden, Franconia, Bergstraße in Hesse, Middle Rhine (Mittelrhein), Moselle, Nahe, Palatinate (Pfalz), Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Saale-Unstrut, Saxony (Sachsen), and Württemberg. With the exception of two regions in the east of the country, all of Germany’s wine-growing areas are concentrated in the south and southwest of Germany. The cool climate allows for a long growing season, enabling the grapes to ripen slowly, maintaining a fruity acidity, developing natural sugars, and absorbing minerals from the soil. Generally low in alcohol, the German wines are very refreshing and aromatic.

Germany’s flagship wine is Riesling, which accounts for 20% of the country’s vineyard area. Germany produces two-thirds of the world’s Riesling, with styles ranging from very dry to sweet. The best-known are the Rieslings from the Moselle. These are light, refreshing wines with notes of lime and flowers on the nose—sometimes honey—and lively acidity and mineral flavors on the palate. In contrast, Riesling produced in warmer regions such as the Pfalz or Rheinhessen often yields drier wines with stone fruit aromas, offering more body and roundness. Elegant German Rieslings with refreshing acidity are perfect for pairing with Asian cuisine.

TheGermany It also produces red wines. In fact, it is the world’s third-largest producer of Pinot Noir, behind France and the United States. Known as Spätburgunder, this grape variety is often grown in southern regions such as Franken, Baden, Württemberg, and the Palatinate. Silky with slightly sweet, fruity aromas, Spätburgunder—with its delicate notes of cherry—is the perfect accompaniment to game.
