“Unconditional love for fruit”

“The enticing nose of violets, black raspberries, and wild strawberries draws you into this vintage. It has an imposing structure for a wine that, on paper, belongs to the Beaujolais-Villages appellation. The firm tannins make this medium-bodied wine distinctly dry and give it great power in the long, fresh, and stony finish. Drink now, but best enjoyed from 2025 onward.” (James Suckling 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

A leading figure in the Beaujolais region in general and in Morgon in particular, Dominique Piron—joined by his partner Julien Révillon—has developed a solid range of Beaujolais wines. Across more than 100 hectares, seven appellations are represented, with Morgon naturally making up the majority. With a refined style and expressive aromas, while retaining the distinctive character of their terroir, the estate’s wines are all outstanding.

About the estate:

As the heir to 14 generations of winemakers, Dominique Piron handed over the reins of the family estate in 2020 to Julien Revillon, his business partner since 2013. Revillon now oversees some 50 hectares, comprising both the estate’s own vineyards and grapes purchased for the merchant division.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Julien Revillon, assisted by his talented winemaker Pierre Meunier, continues Dominique Piron’s legacy with consistency and flair. The duo is supported by vineyard manager Thibaud Lemaître, whose assistance has become essential for overseeing an estate spanning 90 hectares. Their joint efforts have improved the quality of the grapes, and the plot-by-plot selection process they’ve undertaken is beginning to bear fruit. We’re impressed by the consistency of the lineup and its cornerstones: the fruit’s natural spontaneity, its sweetness, and the precise character of each cru.

A remarkable vintage in many ways: with a floral and fruity bouquet and an elegant palate marked by a certain finesse, this 2022 wine offers a pleasantly lingering finish with spicy notes (coriander), exuding good taste and perfect balance.

Medium-deep ruby color. Nose: crushed red fruit, vegetal and earthy notes. Terroir and the primary character of Gamay. A hint of nutmeg and woody stems. On the palate, red berry fruit, high acidity, combined with those vegetal and earthy notes again. It’s all so pure and unpretentious. You do need to be somewhat experienced to appreciate this; otherwise, the wine might easily be labeled as sour, astringent, and bitter… perhaps. For me, a lovely, terroir-driven Beaujolais. A 30% lower price would be better! Score: 15.5/20

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Published on April 25, 2024

I remain cautious about Fructus Agapé, even though it has received rave reviews from certain connoisseurs. The clean, crisp attack continues on the palate with the ultra-fruity juiciness of a delicate, airy texture that glides over a lively framework so distinctly tart that it might seem somewhat excessive. So much so that it disrupts the slightly spicy finish, which quickly collapses onto firm tannins. A cheerful presentation. Not exactly easy to pair, this casual wine is best reserved—after the necessary long aeration—for everyday dishes, such as bruschetta with burrata, Bosses ham, and Parmesan, or eggplant lasagna. Rating = 3.3.
