Bettane & Desseauve
Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)
About the estate:
A leading figure in the Beaujolais region in general and in Morgon in particular, Dominique Piron—joined by his partner Julien Révillon—has developed a solid range of Beaujolais wines. Across more than 100 hectares, seven appellations are represented, with Morgon naturally making up the majority. With a refined style and expressive aromas, while retaining the distinctive character of their terroir, the estate’s wines are all outstanding.

About the estate:
As the heir to 14 generations of winemakers, Dominique Piron handed over the reins of the family estate in 2020 to Julien Revillon, his business partner since 2013. Revillon now oversees some 50 hectares, comprising both the estate’s own vineyards and grapes purchased for the merchant division.

About the wine:
This wine captures the essence of the Côte du Py, with toasty notes that complement the ripe fruit, and a rich, captivating fruit profile from 2022 that delights the palate. Already ready to drink, it has the potential to age for at least 20 years.
About the estate:
Julien Revillon, assisted by his talented winemaker Pierre Meunier, continues Dominique Piron’s legacy with consistency and flair. The duo is supported by vineyard manager Thibaud Lemaître, whose assistance has become essential for overseeing an estate spanning 90 hectares. Their joint efforts have improved the quality of the grapes, and the plot-by-plot selection process they’ve undertaken is beginning to bear fruit. We’re impressed by the consistency of the lineup and its cornerstones: the fruit’s natural spontaneity, its sweetness, and the precise character of each cru.

About the wine:
This Morgon from the Côte du Py has a restrained structure. The wine opens with aromas of black plum and raspberry, underpinned by spring-like notes of undergrowth and subtle black tea. With a silky texture, the wine reveals complex layers of fruit, with hints of dried herbs on the finish. Enjoy now through 2035. — Reggie Solomon

Rated: Recommended
About the wine:
Medium-dark ruby. Very aromatic, with notes of violet, kirsch, and black cherry. On the palate, the 25% oak aging adds a touch of pepper and spice. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, powerful and robust. The tannins are not harsh, but distinct and lingering. The alcohol is well-balanced with refreshing acidity.

Rated winery (2022 guide) Recommended
About the wine:
Welcome to the hidden side of Morgon’s power! Highly concentrated yet with a lively mineral freshness, its fine tannins lend excellent complexity to the medium-bodied palate. A hint of dark chocolate lingers on the vibrant, very long finish of wet stone. Aged 80% in tanks and 20% in oak barrels. Ready to drink now, but best enjoyed starting in 2025.

Beautiful ruby color with purple highlights. Nose: red berries, raspberries, smoky notes, crushed green stems, earthiness. On the palate: crisp red fruit, crunchy, fresh, fine acidity, raspberry, firm tannins that provide structure and backbone. Full-bodied, powerful, warm, with a lovely balance. Delicious with food now, but can certainly age for another 5 to 6 years and become even better. Score: 16.5+/20
