Chiroubles
The Chiroubles appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) is a communal appellation that has been recognized since 1936. Its vineyards cover approximately 360 hectares. Chiroubles wine is produced entirely in the commune that gave it its name.
Made from Gamay noir à jus blanc grapes, as in all Beaujolais vineyards, Chiroubles is a red wine. The vineyard soils are very homogeneous, consisting of coarse-grained granite with a few veins of granulite here and there. The Chiroubles hillsides enjoy favorable exposure to the east and southeast. The terrain is very rugged and uneven. Chiroubles is the highest of the Beaujolais crus, between 250m and 450m above sea level. Chiroubles wines are made from whole bunches, which is specific to Beaujolais. After vatting for 8 to 12 days, depending on the vintage and the winemaker, and an initial alcoholic fermentation, the grapes are pressed. The free-run juice and press juice are then blended, followed by a second fermentation, malolactic, to soften the wines by removing some of their acidity.
With its aromatic and delicious character, Chiroubles wine is often considered the most "Beaujolais" of all the crus. The Chiroubles appellation is particularly typical of the most expressive wines that Gamay can produce, thanks in particular to estates such as Domaine Daniel Bouland, Domaine Emile Cheysson, and Maison Coquard.
Beaujolais wine gaining altitude
Chiroubles wine is the result of manual labor in the heart of the steep slopes where its vines are grown. These vines are located in the north of the Rhône department, in a region that enjoys generous sunshine and the coolness provided by the altitude. This location allows for abundant production, resulting in a balanced and warm wine. Chiroubles is one of the ten Beaujolais crus. The grapes used to make this wine are harvested late. This is a specific feature granted for the creation of this radiant wine.
