"This is an exceptional wine that demands attention (Wine Advocate)."

An inspiring Morgon Côte du Py. When you smell it, you feel like you're diving into a vast chasm filled with blackberries. The medium-bodied palate has surprising mineral energy and concentration. You can almost feel the wind blowing on this hilltop site. Then a wave of fresh blackberries floods your palate in a wonderfully energetic finish." (James Suckling 2024)

Rated estate (2023 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

After graduating with a degree in viticulture and oenology, Jean-Marc Burgaud settled in Morgon on the Côte de Py in 1989. Today, he owns 17 hectares across four appellations: Beaujolais-Villages red and white, Régnié, and Morgon, the latter representing 11.80 hectares. Jean-Marc Burgaud is a discreet winemaker, but you only have to mention his name in the vineyard to quickly understand that his reputation precedes him.

Wine rating (2024 guide) 94/100 (Outstanding wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About wine:

2022 was an exceptional year for Côte du Py, producing wines of great depth that will stand the test of time. On the nose, the Morgon Côte du Py 2022 displays aromas of tart blackberry, plum, blood orange, oak leaf, and slate. Medium-bodied, this wine exudes an energetic presence, characterized by a well-defined structure supported by tart acids and velvety tannins made firm by concentration. Deeply nuanced, it gradually unfolds on the palate with layers of umami richness intertwined with hints of ferrous salinity that blend harmoniously with persistent, tart black fruit. This is an exceptional wine that demands attention.

About the estate:

For several years running, I have observed that Jean-Marc Burgaud is a winemaker at the top of his game, and the success with which he has risen to the challenges of the 2021 vintage is further proof of this assertion. These are some of the most delicious wines produced in the region today, and they are all the better for Burgaud's decision to abandon new oak in favor of dry wood and pursue a gentler extraction than in the past, with his semi-classical carbonic macerations lasting 7 to 15 days depending on the cuvée. And there is only one bottling of each wine, which gives a rare consistency, even for his 4.3 hectares in Beaujolais-Lantignié (one of the best values in the region, by the way).

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100

Rated estate (2023 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About wine:

Côte du Py is undergoing a slight period of austerity. The nose combines toasted notes and Burlat cherries. But the structure on the palate is precise and refined, extended by a delicious and intense acidity. It can be aged for at least 20 years.

About the estate:

Since establishing his estate in 1989, Jean-Marc Burgaud has become a fixture in our guide. From his apprenticeship in Burgundy, he has retained the practice of working with single vineyard cuvées, aging that sometimes extends over two winters, and destemming adapted to the year and the wine. His winemaking always brings a velvety touch to Gamay, achieved through barrel aging (very little new oak) adjusted according to each climate (most of which are located on different terroirs in Morgon). He also produces Régnié and Beaujolais-Villages on the granite soils of Lantignié. The style has opened up over time, without losing sight of the expression of the terroir.

About wine:

The Morgon Côte du Py 2022 has an absolutely delicious bouquet. Much more charming than the Corcelette, it shows exquisite definition with fragrant red fruit and mineral notes. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannins, very concentrated and a touch of Indian spices on the finish. This wine has a long life ahead of it. It is so refined and elegant.
