About the estate:

After earning his degree in viticulture and oenology, Jean-Marc Burgaud settled in Morgon on the Côte de Py in 1989. Today he owns 17 hectares across four appellations: Beaujolais-Villages red and white, Régnié, and Morgon, with the latter accounting for 11.80 hectares. Jean-Marc Burgaud is a low-key winemaker, but one need only mention his name in the vineyards to quickly realize that his reputation precedes him.

About the estate:

For several years in a row, I have observed that Jean-Marc Burgaud is a winemaker at the top of his game, and the success with which he has risen to the challenges of the 2021 vintage is further proof of this. These are among the most delightful wines produced in the region today, and they are all the better for the fact that Burgaud has abandoned new oak in favor of seasoned oak and is pursuing a gentler extraction than in the past with his semi-classical method—carbonic maceration lasting 7 to 15 days, depending on the cuvée. And there is only a single bottling of each wine, which results in a rare consistency, even across his 4.3 hectares in Beaujolais-Lantignié (one of the region’s best values, by the way).

About the wine:

A beautiful expression of the fruit, juicy, with a flavor profile brought out by careful aging. The nose carries a lovely hint of terroir, reflecting the change in style of this cuvée. The palate is full-bodied, luscious, and finely textured, with a concentrated yet refined flavor.

About the estate:

Since founding his estate in 1989, Jean-Marc Burgaud has become a staple in our guide. From his apprenticeship in Burgundy, he adopted the practice of producing wines from single-vineyard lots, aging that sometimes extends over two winters, and destemming tailored to the specific vintage and wine. His winemaking consistently lends a velvety character to Gamay, achieved through barrel aging (with very little new oak) tailored to each vineyard (the majority of which are located across various terroirs in Morgon). He also produces Régnié and Beaujolais-Villages from the granitic soils of Lantignié. The style has become more open over time, without losing sight of the terroir’s expression.

About the wine:

Deep, rich, and earthy, this oak-aged Morgon has a lot to offer, yet it also displays fantastic balance (which isn’t always the case with oak-aged wines from this appellation). It has a compact tannic structure on the palate and is medium-bodied, yet surprisingly balanced thanks to its long, elegantly dry, and flavorful finish. Aged in 10-year-old 350-liter barrels. It can be enjoyed now, but will reach its peak starting in 2026.
