"This bestseller has once again been awarded three gold medals!"

"This is a lovely, well-structured wine, bursting with delicious aromas of black fruits, particularly blackcurrant, and a few woody notes. With rich tannins, powerful and long on the palate, it will need to mellow further before accompanying a flavorful meat dish." (Guide Hachette 2026)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

The 67 hectares of vineyards on this family estate overlook the Gironde estuary, directly opposite the most prestigious Margaux wines. Keen to reveal the potential of these magnificent terroirs while respecting the environment, Dominique Raimond uses every means of cultivation and vinification to produce a great Blayais wine. The whites are generally very aromatic, with good tension and a good balance of freshness. The Côtes-de-Bourg Cuvée Altus is always top-notch, as is the grand vin in Blaye-Côtes-de-Bordeaux. A flagship property in both appellations. Montfollet is part of the Châteaux Solidaires association, which brings together ten Blaye winegrowers who retain their own identity while sharing cellars and tools in a spirit of cooperation. Château Haut-Prieur is part of this association and is superb in the 2016 vintage.

About wine:

This is a lovely, well-structured wine, bursting with delicious aromas of black fruits, particularly blackcurrant, and a few woody notes. With rich tannins, powerful and long on the palate, it will need to mellow further before accompanying a flavorful meat dish. 2028-2033

About the estate:

Ch. Montfollet, one of the leading lights of the Blaye and Bourgeais regions, has been run since 1991 by Dominique Raimond, who also owns several other châteaux: Haut Lalande, Graulet, Merigot, Haut Grela, and Puy d'Amour. Dominique Raimond is a member of the Cars cooperative (1937), renamed "Châteaux Solidaires" in 2011, which vinifies separately the harvests of a dozen member châteaux, selected with great rigor.

About wine:

Barrel aging gives this wine its toasty aroma and spicy texture. It is a structured wine with solid tannins and a dry mid-palate. Notes of black fruit envelop the wine's density, giving it a juicy character. Drink from 2027 onwards.

Rated estate (2021 guide) Recommended

About wine:

A robust, juicy, and lively blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Malbec. The nose reveals notes of black plum, bark, dried herbs, and baking spices. Medium-bodied, it has fine, firm tannins. A hint of spice in the mid-palate complements the structured, powerful mouthfeel and the savory, lingering finish. Drink now or hold.
