Château de Chainchon - Valmy Dubourdieu-Lange 2014
2*Coup de Coeur
Hachette
“In the glass, intense aromas of incredible freshness, centered on blackcurrant, raspberry, and morello cherry, accompanied by sweet spices, licorice, and toast. On the palate? Fruit, fruit, and more fruit! A crisp, explosive fruitiness that complements a palate that is at once powerful and refined, full-bodied and long-lasting. A bottle that’s already incredibly charming, but with enormous potential.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2018)

About the wine:
This label is no stranger to acclaim: the 1996, 1998, and 2012 vintages have all been featured in these pages. Like its predecessors, the 2014 vintage showcases the oldest vines at Château de Chainchon, planted some forty years ago on a very steep, fully grassed hillside and cultivated for low yields. In the glass, intense aromas of incredible freshness, centered on blackcurrant, raspberry, and morello cherry, accompanied by sweet spices, licorice, and toast. On the palate? Fruit, fruit, and more fruit! A crisp, explosive fruitiness that complements a palate that is at once powerful and refined, full-bodied and long-lasting. A bottle that’s already incredibly charming, but with enormous potential.
About the estate:
A former cellar master at a Saint-Émilion classified growth, Patrick Érésué has been managing Château de Chainchon (22 ha) in Castillon-Côtes-de-Bordeaux since 1996; the estate has been in his family since 1846. He created the Valmy Dubourdieu-Lange cuvée, a staple of the appellation, and initiated the estate’s transition to organic farming (certified in 2013).

Fruity, with a hint of clove and nice tannins; best enjoyed now

A lovely surprise—even though I'm not usually a fan of Bordeaux—a beautiful bottle with just the right amount of oak, a harmonious wine.

Deep color, very expressive nose of red fruits, lively attack, rich body supported by great freshness, powerful and long. Lots of potential!

This wine is still quite astringent and full-bodied. It’s worth letting it age for at least 3 years.

How awful. Way, way too young. Almost undrinkable. You absolutely have to let it age for at least 3 years and hope it improves.
