“This 2008 lives up to its highly promising bright red color, offering first a clean and complex bouquet, underpinned by toasty oak; then a concentrated palate with fine, tight tannins. Still austere, the finish calls for three or four years of aging to refine itself. In five or six years, the wine will be at its peak.” (Guide Hachette des Vins)

Wine rated (2012 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2023 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the wine:

This powerful, robust Graves wine has good aging potential, offering intense, ripe fruit and a characteristic minerality.

About the estate:

Long considered one of the appellation’s flagship estates, this vast property in the southern Graves region belongs to the Levêque family, who are also renowned wine merchants in the Bordeaux region. It is now managed by Hubert de Boüard (Château Angélus), who produces highly characteristic wines—both red and white—that are destined for great success. Both the red and white wines are highly expressive, delicately aromatic, rather refined, and well-balanced. The Caroline cuvée, the estate’s flagship wine with a well-established reputation, is rich yet never lacking in elegance.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine rated (2012 guide) 2** stars (Outstanding wine)

Rated estate (2023 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

Henri Lévêque, the estate’s founder, received the Favorite Graves” award in the first edition of the Guide (a 1982 vintage); a cuvée dedicated to his memory earned the same distinction last year. A beautiful estate of nearly 100 hectares, Chantegrive is a true mosaic of plots, all of which are of the highest quality, as evidenced by this perfectly crafted wine—half Merlot, half Cabernet Sauvignon—among many others. Throughout the tasting, this 2008 strives to live up to its highly promising bright red color, first offering a straightforward and complex bouquet, supported by toasty oak; then a concentrated palate, with fine, tight tannins. Still austere, the finish calls for three or four years of aging to refine itself. In five or six years, the wine will be at its peak.

About the estate:

Created from scratch in 1967 by wine merchant Henri Lévêque, this estate—which originally covered 2 hectares—is now a beautiful, cohesive property spanning nearly 100 hectares (HVE3-certified), currently managed by the founder’s daughter, Marie-Hélène Lévêque, who has been advised by Hubert de Boüard since 2006. A sure bet in Graves, with numerous " Favorites its credit.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated 14.5/20 (Good)

About the wine:

A very soft and light Graves, expressing freshness through floral notes of peony and fresh blackcurrant. On the palate, herbal notes emerge with hints of menthol and cut grass; the fruitiness takes over with blackcurrant, enveloping some crisp tannins.

Wine rated (2011 guide) 87/100 (Very good wine)

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

Aromas of licorice, forest floor, blackcurrant, and cedar fill the glass of this fine Graves. With silky tannins and a medium-bodied profile, it should be enjoyed within the next 3 to 4 years.

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

An iconic estate in Podensac, at the heart of the Graves appellation, Chantegrive was founded by Henri Lévêque. This long-standing Bordeaux wine merchant began the venture in 1966 with just two hectares of vineyards. Long a pioneer in the production of ambitious wines, Chantegrive experienced a slump in the early 2000s. The estate, taken over by Marie-Hélène Lévêque with the guidance of Hubert de Boüard since 2006, now produces wines that have regained their place among the appellation’s finest. Launched in 2020, the Les Oiseaux range offers a cleverly modern and spontaneous take on Graves wines.

Disappointing; far too tannic for its age, with a lot of body on the palate.

Review by Ms. Virginie N. Posted on October 26, 2014

On the first tasting, without decanting, it wasn’t enjoyable—the tannins were too harsh. On the second tasting, after being decanted for 5 hours, it was very pleasant, though it still had the power typical of Graves wines. Nevertheless, I think it can be cellared for 1 or 2 years, as the Hachette guide suggests.
