About the estate:
A new wine-making facility and the takeover by the highly capable Claire Villars-Lurton—who has implemented a respectful and meticulous approach to viticulture—have enabled this Margaux cru classé to regain its rightful place. The 2018, 2019, and 2020 vintages illustrate the estate’s progress. The wines continue to gain in finesse.

About the estate:
Owned by the Ferrière family from the 18th century until 1914, this vineyard was leased starting in 1952 by Alexis Lichine, who moved the winemaking operations to Lascombes. Purchased in 1988 by the Villard family, it was revitalized in 1992 upon the expiration of the lease agreement. Completely renovated by Claire Villars-Lurton (Haut-Bages Libéral in Pauillac), the vineyard covers 20 hectares and is farmed organically.

About the estate:
Although it is a very small estate, Ferrière continues to forge its own path. Claire Villars-Lurton, who runs it, spares no effort: she oversaw the construction of a new winery, which has been operational since the 2013 harvest, and the vineyard has been certified biodynamic since 2015. Each year, the wines gain a little more depth, offering a distinctive style without ever trying to show off. It is now a sure bet in Margaux.

Ferrière 2020 is phenomenal. Black fruits, lavender, gravel, incense, and dark spices are just a few of the many notes that unfold. A wine with vertical, explosive energy, Ferrière is fabulous. The tannins are still a bit harsh at this point. Readers will need to be patient, but all the ingredients are in place for this 2020 to be superb. Château Ferrière possesses a sense of unbridled wildness that is extremely alluring.

The complex aromas of crushed berries, nuts, damp earth, and spices carry through to a full- to medium-bodied palate, with chewy yet juicy tannins and a savory finish. It needs time to soften, but I love its character and intensity. 68% Cabernet, 27% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Made from biodynamically grown grapes certified by Demeter. Best enjoyed after 2025.
