Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

3-star rating (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

A new vat room and the arrival of the highly skilled Claire Villars-Lurton, who has introduced respectful and attentive viticultural practices, have enabled this Margaux classified growth to regain its rightful place. The 2018, 2019, and 2020 vintages illustrate the progress made by the estate. The wines continue to gain in finesse.

Decanter

Decanter

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About wine:

Magnificent aroma of rose and milk chocolate, expressive, lively, and inviting. Round and supple, generous aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and strawberry. Full-bodied and well-textured, the tannins are fine and perfectly integrated, providing just a touch of grip and support to the fruit and high acidity. Well-controlled, delicate, confident but not at all ostentatious, with beautiful energy and power from start to finish. Pleasant texture and juiciness, pretty and always structured. It doesn't have a lot of concentration or obvious power, but it really offers a magnificent, sculpted, precise, refined wine with lots of energy and dynamism. Excellent mineral and stony finish with impressive length. You can drink it today. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 75-80% grand vin production. pH of 3.64. Yield of 24 hl/ha. Aging: 18 months, 35% in new oak barrels, 35% in one-wine barrels. 2028-2049

About the estate:

Owned by the Ferrière family from the 18th century until 1914, this vineyard was leased from 1952 onwards by Alexis Lichine, who moved the winemaking operations to Lascombes. Purchased in 1988 by the Villard family, it was reborn in 1992 at the end of the lease. Completely renovated by Claire Villars-Lurton (Haut-Bages Libéral in Pauillac), the vineyard covers 20 hectares and is organically farmed.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 96/100

Rated estate (2022 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good-quality wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About wine:

The philosophy behind this wine is evident in this very refined and vibrant 2022 vintage. The fruit is dynamic on the palate, and aging in wood, vats, and amphorae preserves the structure while adding roundness. A wine that is both powerful and controlled.

About the estate:

Ferrière is a very small estate, but it continues to forge its own path. Claire Villars-Lurton, who runs it, spares no effort: she has built a new winery, which has been operational since the 2013 harvest, and the vineyard has been certified biodynamic since 2015. The wines are gaining a little more density every year, offering a distinctive style without ever trying to show off. It is now a sure bet in Margaux.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About wine:

Black in color. Intense nose, ripe fruitiness, with complex nuances. The palate evokes velvety, flavorful grape juice. After a full mid-palate, a fine, sappy structure appears, followed by a long finish. It's very good.
