Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

A new wine-making facility and the takeover by the highly capable Claire Villars-Lurton—who has implemented a respectful and meticulous approach to viticulture—have enabled this Margaux cru classé to regain its rightful place. The 2018, 2019, and 2020 vintages illustrate the estate’s progress. The wines continue to gain in finesse.

Decanter

Decanter

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A magnificent aroma of rose and milk chocolate—expressive, lively, and inviting. Round and supple, with generous aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and strawberry. Full-bodied and well-structured, with fine, perfectly integrated tannins that provide just a touch of grip and support to the fruit and the high acidity. Well-controlled, delicate, and confident yet not at all ostentatious, with beautiful energy and power from start to finish. Pleasant texture and juiciness, attractive and consistently structured. It lacks significant concentration or overt power, but truly offers a magnificent wine—sculpted, precise, refined, with plenty of energy and dynamism. Excellent mineral and stony finish, with impressive length. You can enjoy it right now. 1% Cabernet Franc rounds out the blend. 75–80% of the production is classified as grand vin. pH of 3.64. Yield of 24 hl/ha. Aging: 18 months, 35% in new oak barrels, 35% in one-use barrels. 2028–2049

About the estate:

Owned by the Ferrière family from the 18th century until 1914, this vineyard was leased starting in 1952 by Alexis Lichine, who moved the winemaking operations to Lascombes. Purchased in 1988 by the Villard family, it was revived in 1992 upon the expiration of the lease agreement. Completely renovated by Claire Villars-Lurton (Haut-Bages Libéral in Pauillac), the vineyard covers 20 hectares and is farmed organically.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 96/100

Rated estate (2022 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

The philosophy of this vintage is evident in this very refined and vibrant 2022. The fruit is lively on the palate, and aging in wood, tanks, and amphorae helps preserve the structure while adding roundness. A wine that is both powerful and well-balanced.

About the estate:

Although it is a very small estate, Ferrière continues to forge its own path. Claire Villars-Lurton, who runs it, spares no effort: she oversaw the construction of a new winery, which has been operational since the 2013 harvest, and the vineyard has been certified biodynamic since 2015. Each year, the wines gain a little more depth, offering a distinctive style without ever trying to show off. It is now a sure bet in Margaux.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

Black in color. Intense nose with ripe fruit and complex nuances. On the palate, it evokes velvety, flavorful grape juice. After a full-bodied mid-palate, a delicate, sap-like structure emerges, followed by a long finish. It’s very good.
