Château Margaux
Margaux wine: an exceptional wine from the Haut-Médoc
Located in a unique setting in the heart of the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River, the magnificent Château Margaux estate—founded by Marquis Colonilla in 1810—serves as a benchmark for the Margaux appellation with its world-class red wine produced on the estate.
This red wine took on its definitive name in the 16th century, and even then, its exceptional reputation was already well established. From that point on, Château Margaux—whose vintages have consistently been highly regarded—continued to be celebrated as one of the “greatest French wines.”
A leading figure in the Bordeaux region, Château Margaux became one of the four "Premier Grand Cru Classé" wines in 1855 at the second World’s Fair in Paris. This classification, initiated by Napoleon III, brought the Great Wines of Bordeaux to the forefront and, by extension, Château Margaux, which was the only wine to receive the highest score of 20 during the blind tasting. From that point on, Château Margaux became one of the legendary, must-have wines not only of the Médoc but of the entire world.
Today, the vineyard spans 94 hectares and continues its legacy of excellence under the leadership of Corinne MENTZELOPOULOS, the current owner. Following in the footsteps of her father, who acquired the château in 1977, she and her team continue to uphold the legacy. What are the keys to the success of this legendary wine? An exceptional terroir, the work of passionate people, high standards, valuable expertise, and patience. The traditional Médoc grape varieties are cultivated, with a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc (82 hectares), as well as Sauvignon Blanc (12 hectares) for Château Margaux’s sole white wine, the Pavillon Blanc.
On the "Castle Route," Margaux wine is both renowned and highly regarded. The Margaux wine region lies between the Bordeaux region, the Dordogne, and the Garonne, near the two rivers that border it.
Château Margaux is one of the finest expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, offering finesse and delicacy, yet it is the kind of wine that requires patience, given its exceptional aging potential. A wine that never disappoints, always living up to expectations.
Since 2009, Château Margaux has been producing a third wine, Margaux de Château Margaux; its second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Margaux, was first released in 1908.
Margaux red wine: a subtle and delicate wine with a unique blend
The Grand Cru Classé, Château Margaux, covers 1,400 hectares in the southern Médoc. Annual production of Margaux red wine is approximately 63,000 hectoliters. Château Margaux red wine is produced on the finest soils and is considered one of the most prestigious appellations in the Médoc. This exceptional wine encompasses the following communes: Soussans, Labarde, Arsac, Cantenac, and Margaux.
Thanks to its unique blend, Margaux wine is a refined and elegant wine. When you buy a Margaux wine, you are buying a wine often described as "feminine."
Margaux wine is often described as feminine because of its defining characteristic, which embodies delicacy, finesse, and complexity. Unlike most Bordeaux wines, which tend to be quite powerful, Margaux wine is a subtle blend of harmony and purity.
Margaux wine is a wine that ages well, with a smooth, lingering finish, delicate tannins, and a subtle flavor.
The Margaux Wine Region
The Margaux red wine refers to both the château and the commune. Located on exceptional land dedicated to viticulture, the Margaux appellation owes its origins to the nature of its soil. Its plateau, shaped by erosion and composed of pebbles, clay, and sand, provides well-drained soils that promote root growth and water retention, making it ideal for growing grapes and producing high-quality wines.
The blend of Margaux wine is a legacy of the region’s typical grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.
Buying Margaux wine: What should you pair with Château Margaux?
