About the estate:

The story goes that British General Charles Palmer, during a trip to France in 1814, fell under the spell of Marie de Gascq, who was looking for a buyer for her Médoc wine. Palmer was born. In 1853, the Pereire brothers, influential bankers, built the current château and developed the vineyard. Then, from 1938 onwards, the Mähler-Besse, Sichel, Miailhe and Ginestet families took over (only the first two remain today). Managed since 2004 by Thomas Duroux, this third growth, often considered a "super second," extends its 66 hectares over the rolling hills of Cantenac.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About wine:

Palmer's Alter Ego 2014 is a blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 13% Petit Verdot. It has an opulent, brilliant bouquet with layers of small black cherries and lots of glycerin. The palate is more reserved than the bouquet suggests: saturated tannins, a little chewy on entry but more supple on the finish. It feels very linear in keeping with the style of the vintage, the finish a little sweeter than its peers with a hint of licorice in the aftertaste.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 17/20 (Great wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide) 3 stars (These represent the excellence of French vineyards. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical moment.)

About wine:

Delicate, full-bodied, and very smooth on the palate, with a lovely texture and volume.

About the estate:

Alongside Château Margaux, Palmer is the other big star of an appellation that is all too often heterogeneous. Its style, characterized by opulence and roundness, with a magnificent silkiness, is nevertheless very different from that of its neighbor. The explanation lies mainly in the difference in grape varieties (and therefore terroir) between the two wines. Château Palmer is one of the Médoc classified growths with the highest proportion of Merlot in its final blend (around 50%). Palmer has written its legend by producing some absolutely sumptuous wines: the 1961, 1983, and 1989 vintages remain essential references. Now owned by the heirs of two great families, the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families, Palmer is run by the brilliant Thomas Duroux, who has taken the latest vintages to the top. It has been certified biodynamic since 2018.
