Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

The story goes that British General Charles Palmer, during a trip to France in 1814, fell under the spell of Marie de Gascq, who was looking for a buyer for her Médoc wine. Palmer was born. In 1853, the Pereire brothers, influential bankers, built the current château and developed the vineyard. Then, from 1938 onwards, the Mähler-Besse, Sichel, Miailhe and Ginestet families took over (only the first two remain today). Managed since 2004 by Thomas Duroux, this third growth, often considered a "super second," extends its 66 hectares over the rolling hills of Cantenac.

Rated estate (2021 guide) 3 stars (These represent the excellence of French vineyards. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical moment.)

About wine:

With 2019, Palmer has produced one of its greatest successes: a wine of truly impressive purity and brilliance. The palate shines with juicy fruitiness, the heart of the wine is mellow and the finish is silky smooth. A real treat.

About the estate:

Alongside Château Margaux, Palmer is the other big star of an appellation that is all too often heterogeneous. Its style, characterized by opulence and roundness, with a magnificent silkiness, is nevertheless very different from that of its neighbor. The explanation lies mainly in the difference in grape varieties (and therefore terroir) between the two wines. Château Palmer is one of the Médoc classified growths with the highest proportion of Merlot in its final blend (around 50%). Palmer has written its legend by producing some absolutely sumptuous wines: the 1961, 1983, and 1989 vintages remain essential references. Now owned by the heirs of two great families, the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families, Palmer is run by the brilliant Thomas Duroux, who has taken the latest vintages to the top. It has been certified biodynamic since 2018.

About wine:

This is a very refined wine with a serious structure that is softened by generous black fruit flavors. It is very well-balanced and smooth, with velvety tannins. This wine will age well for many years. Drink from 2028 onwards. Organic and biodynamic.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 98/100

About wine:

Palmer 2019 is a truly special wine, but it will need a number of years to reach its peak. Dense and opulent, with explosive energy, the 2019 has a tremendous richness of black fruit. As always, the blend includes a high percentage of Merlot (43%), which complements the flavor of the Cabernet so well. Thomas Duroux and his team have crafted another absolutely compelling Palmer in 2019. 2029-2069

James Suckling

James Suckling

Wine rated (2021 guide) 99/100

About wine:

So much sweet tobacco, stone, bramble, and blackcurrant on the nose. The palate is full and compact with very polished but solid and robust tannins that extend throughout the length and breadth of the wine. Energetic acidity. Very structured and powerful, yet agile and impressive. Historic sensation. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. It needs at least 6 years of bottle aging to soften. Try after 2027.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 98/100

About wine:

Palmer's bouquet displays its characteristic finesse and subtlety. It is composed of many facets with subtle fruity nuances. The attack is serene and slightly creamy. It is in line with many left bank wines; indeed, with a discreet attack, the wine reveals itself along the palate and highlights its tannins at the very end. These are powerful and refined, highlighting the greatness of the 2019 vintage. This Palmer is certainly destined for long-term aging. It shines with its balance, delicacy, and precision. 2027-2060
