Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated (2019 guide) 96/100

Rated estate (2021 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

A well-rounded wine that combines power, aromatic finesse, and full ripeness with freshness, featuring beautifully extracted tannins—a prime example of classic Bordeaux style.

About the estate:

Owned by the Castéja family and expertly guided by the late Denis Dubourdieu, the wine has regained the fullness of its style, combining the power it often displayed between 1945 and 1961 with infinitely greater purity and aromatic finesse. The wines have improved dramatically since the 2000s and represent one of the best values in Pauillac. Since 2015, a second wine, Lions-de-Batailley, has allowed for an even more rigorous selection of grapes for the grand vin.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The flagship wine of Borie Manoux, a venerable wine merchant founded in 1870 by the Castéja family—one of the oldest families in Pauillac—which has owned the estate since 1932. A beautiful, cohesive 55-hectare estate at the southwestern edge of the appellation, which is said to owe its name to a battle that took place on these lands in 1453.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 96/100

Rated Estate (2022 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

Ultra-classic in style, with character, vitality, and power. Driven by sumptuous Cabernets, it possesses tremendous energy, definition, and length. A benchmark for this vintage.

About the estate:

Philippe Castéja produces a Pauillac of classic style and structure, which has gained considerably in definition and precision in recent years. The wine also ages remarkably well, retaining a profile that is very typical of the great Médoc wines, combining integrity and precision. Prices remain very affordable. We are delighted by the consistency and excellent quality of the most recent vintages.

James Suckling

James Suckling

Wine rated (2021 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

Aromas of blackberry, cocoa, oyster shell, graphite, and black tea. It is medium-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. The wine is structured, intense, tight, and precise. It will need a few years to soften and open up.

Yves Beck

Yves Beck

Wine rated (2020 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

What a superb bouquet! Intense, complex, and so very Pauillac! It embodies all the characteristics of this region, with notes of cedar, graphite, and black berries (elderberry, blackberries). On the palate, the wine continues its Pauillac-style journey with panache. It’s dense, intense, robust, and refined! That’s quite an achievement! The tannins are compact, perfectly integrated, and in harmony with the liveliness of the structure that supports the finish—both in terms of aroma and length. What a great wine… certainly one of the best Batailleys I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting!
