“A concentrated and refined red wine with a clean profile that showcases precision ~ James Suckling”

“The precision and authenticity of the bouquet highlight the terroir and the Cabernet Sauvignon, while also showcasing finesse and depth. Thus, Batailley stands out with confidence through notes of black berries and peppermint, followed by a hint of graphite. Dense on the attack, the wine unfolds in a crescendo. It possesses power, but also finesse, which defines its greatness. This is a Batailley that is perhaps less demonstrative than usual, with an incredible ability to assert its authenticity without raising its voice. It reminds us once again that it is an exceptional wine and that it reflects what the terroir entrusts to it. Yet it must still be assimilated, which it does with subtlety and precision.” (Yves Beck 2026)

Rated estate (2021 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

Owned by the Castéja family and expertly guided by the late Denis Dubourdieu, the wine has regained the fullness of its style, combining the power it often displayed between 1945 and 1961 with infinitely greater purity and aromatic finesse. The wines have improved dramatically since the 2000s and represent one of the best values in Pauillac. Since 2015, a second wine, Lions-de-Batailley, has allowed for an even more rigorous selection of grapes for the grand vin.

Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

The flagship wine of Borie Manoux, a venerable wine merchant founded in 1870 by the Castéja family—one of Pauillac’s oldest families—which has owned the estate since 1932. A beautiful 55-hectare estate located at the southwestern edge of the appellation, it is said to owe its name to a battle that took place on these lands in 1453.

Rated estate (2022 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

Philippe Castéja produces a Pauillac of classic style and structure, which has gained considerably in definition and precision in recent years. The wine also ages remarkably well, retaining a profile that is very typical of the great Médoc wines, combining integrity and precision. Prices remain very reasonable. We are delighted by the consistency and excellent quality of the most recent vintages.
