success story

"Clerc Milon 2019 is a real success. At over 70%, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the estate's recent history, and the result is a wine of real nobility. This wine is by far the most structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild's two stablemates in Pauillac. " (Wine Advocate 2022). Wine rated (2020 guide) 95/100

Rated estate (2016 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About wine:

Rich, colorful, full-bodied, with a blend that gives more prominence to Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage, as will be the case in future vintages. A beautiful, classic Pauillac with great aging potential, magnificent oak aging, and a price that is still affordable.

About the estate:

Along with Armailhac, this is the other fifth growth classified by the Rothschild family (Mouton). Long overshadowed by its elder brother Mouton and lacking a little personality, since the 2000s it has regained its character thanks to more rigorous and individualized management. A new, highly original winery, built entirely of wood in accordance with strict environmental specifications, now allows this superb Pauillac fifth growth to be vinified and aged in the best possible conditions. Its terroir is more clayey than that of the Mouton plateau, giving greater richness of expression to the Merlot grape variety, which is used here in greater proportions.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100

About wine:

A generous and fairly expressive Cabernet nose, filled with blackcurrant and black plum. Rich and densely concentrated, but with a refreshing freshness from the limestone. Deep on the palate, it is powerful and offers a real sense of complexity of flavors that are well-structured and direct. Smooth and muscular at the same time, with a fresh, minty, licorice, and gently sweet finish that leaves a truly lasting and delicious impression. A brilliantly concentrated, powerful, and sophisticated glass of wine. Lingering finish, which will age very well. I love the texture and overall feel of this wine. About the estate:

Formerly owned by Lafite, this classified growth was acquired during the Revolution by the Clerc family, who added the name of a hamlet in Pauillac to its name, then by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1970. Located between Mouton and Lafite, in the northeastern part of the appellation, it has a 41-hectare vineyard planted on prime terroir (mainly the Mousset hilltop overlooking the Gironde) and a new winery built in 2011.

About wine:

Clerc Milon 2019 is a real success. At over 70%, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the estate's recent history, and the result is a wine of real nobility. Offering aromas of violet, wild berries, licorice, clay soil, and cigar wrapper, it is full-bodied, complex, and multidimensional, with notable depth at its core, lively acidity, and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. Grown on clay-limestone soils rather than the sandy gravels that characterize d'Armailhac, this wine is by far the more structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild's two stablemates in Pauillac. Rated estate (2016 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About wine:

The vintage with the highest percentage of Cabernet since... 1986. The wine continues to develop in a more straightforward, racy style with beautiful tension. A benchmark bottle for the vintage that heralds a new style that we wholeheartedly endorse.

About the estate:

This château is part of the Rothschild (Mouton) estate portfolio. It is always fascinating to compare it with its sister estate, Armailhac. Vinified by the same team, the latter is more traditional, with a significant proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend, while the former has a higher proportion of Merlot. After a period of ups and downs, the wine is back to its best, with better definition in terms of concentration and velvety texture. The recent construction of a vat room and cellar has enabled the estate to go even further.

About wine:

The 2019 vintage of Château Clerc Milon is seriously impressive. Dense, opulent, and explosive, Clerc Milon 2019 offers a captivating blend of ink, dense fruit intertwined with savory accents from the 72% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (the highest since 1986). Dried herbs, tobacco, menthol, and licorice intertwine in a deep and resonant finish. Superb.

About wine:

Aromas of crushed stone, blackcurrant, and blackberry. Full-bodied, with extremely well-crafted tannins that are mellow and massive, yet polished and fantastic. I love the finish. Drink after 2026.

About wine:

If we close our eyes, we find ourselves standing before a deep, cold lake, before notes of peony arrive. Black fruit on the palate, hints of elderberry, and a lovely length. A wine that evokes a gentle caress, albeit a little shy.

Yves Beck

Yves Beck

Wine rated (2021 guide) 95/100

About wine:

You have to go back to the 1986 vintage to find this much Cabernet Sauvignon at Clerc-Milon. The bouquet is fresh and subtle with elegant notes of red fruit followed by hints of mocha, licorice, and graphite. On the palate, the wine evolves slowly, like many great Pauillacs from this vintage. The tannins are fine, precise, juicy, and in harmony with the acidity. A wine with body, swing, and great length. A beautiful success that will stand the test of time for decades to come.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100

About wine:

Dark, intense, purple color. Moderately intense nose, with ripe fruit and a delicate creaminess. It is above all on the palate that this wine reveals its appeal, but also its new delight. Soft on the palate, offering a delicate texture and a very flavorful body, with a bright aroma, the wine evolves fully without losing its meticulous character, leading to a long finish where the taste nevertheless evokes the right bank (thanks to the limestone). A superb ensemble, more precise than ever.

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2020 guide) 94/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About wine:

The nose is elegant and refined, offering a slight concentration/power (but well controlled), good finesse of grain and a little intensity. There are notes of pulpy blackcurrant, pulpy strawberry and, more subtly, pulpy black berries combined with hints of violet, lily, zan, Cubeb pepper, nutmeg, very discreet hints of spice and a subtle hint of vanilla. The palate is fruity and balanced, offering a juicy/finely acidic structure, tension, finesse, a very fine creaminess, a lovely juiciness/freshness, good definition, deliciousness, a fine (and racy) grain, and precision. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy blackcurrant, juicy/fresh blackberry and, more subtly, juicy/fresh strawberry, combined with delicate hints of violet, lily, chocolate, caramelization, as well as very subtle hints of zan, Cubeb pepper, and a very subtle hint of star anise and toasted hazelnut. The tannins are elegant, racy, and very finely mellow.

About wine:

Blackcurrant, licorice, Cabernet Franc with lovely floral notes. Full-bodied and taut on the palate, dense yet always delicate and refined. Powerful too, but perfectly restrained. Such freshness! A Clerc Milon with great aging potential.
