Château Haut-Bages Libéral
Adjacent to the vineyards of Château Latour and Château Pichon Baron in Pauillac, the Libéral family, brokers from father to son, managed the Haut Bages Libéralestate fromthe early 18th century. They brought together the best terroirs, enabling Château Haut Bages Libéral to enter the famous 1855 classification and achieve the title of Fifth Growth.
In 1960, the Cruse family, new owners who already headed another Fifth Growth, Pontet-Canet, gave the Haut Bages Libéral vineyard a facelift with a vast program of replanting the vines. In 1982, the Villars-Merlaut family reaped the full benefits of this hard work.
Since 2000, Claire Villars-Lurton has taken over from her parents and oversees the development of Cru Haut Bages Libéral as well as Châteaux Ferrière and La Gurgue.

The Haut Bages Libéral vineyard covers 30 hectares of vines, 70% of which are Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, on two types of soil: deep gravel and clay-limestone, chalky limestone.
