"Château Haut-Bages Monpelou offers a fairly rich bouquet of saturated black cherries and blackcurrants infused with pencil shavings. Rather classic in style, the palate has a firm, masculine backbone with good salinity. On the finish, the wine offers judicious notes of black pepper and bay leaf. The Castéja family has produced a very good 2016 vintage." (Wine Advocate 2017 – Neal Martin)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

It is owned by Philippe Castéja, who also owns Château Batailley in Pauillac and Trottevieille in Saint-Émilion. Well located on the plateau north of the town, the vineyard has always produced a consistent wine, which has gained in elegance in recent years.

Decanter

Decanter

Wine rated (2018 guide) 91/100

About wine:

On the same gravelly plateau as Château Batailley, you can sense the tight, youthful, and raw acidity of a young Cabernet-dominant Pauillac. It is extremely tight and young, with a minty freshness on the finish. It offers excellent value for money given its typicity and aging potential. Ideal tasting range: 2024–2038.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

The flagship wine of Borie Manoux, a venerable wine merchant founded in 1870 by the Castéja family, one of the oldest families in Pauillac, who have owned the estate since 1932. A beautiful 55-hectare estate at the southwestern edge of the appellation, which owes its name to a battle that took place on these lands in 1453.

About wine:

There are lots of Cabernet aromas with redcurrants and flowers like dried lavender. It's full-bodied on the palate, with firm, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Really nice length. Enjoy after 2022. This is a Pauillac to keep an eye on.
