Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

The Cazes family now owns this estate, which originated as a division of Château Batailley. The vineyards are easily recognizable by the picturesque tower known as the “Aspic,” which stands in the middle of them, and by the wine-red color of the winery. Under the Borie family, the estate produced an elegant and relatively supple Pauillac; it now appears to have gained in body and intensity without losing any of its finesse.

Wine noted (guide 2022) 1*Star (Very successful wine)

About the wine:

Well-structured, this wine displays elegance and intensity with a deep red color and offers a fresh, fruity, spicy, and chocolatey bouquet. This aromatic profile carries over into a full-bodied, warm, and powerful palate, supported by firm, tight tannins, with a welcome touch of freshness on the finish. 2025–2032

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

A new chapter is about to begin for this estate, which was long managed under a leasehold arrangement by François-Xavier Borie (Grand-Puy-Lacoste) and was sold to the Cazes family in 2017. The technical facilities are up to date, and the quality of the wines is consistent. We will need to monitor its stylistic evolution in the coming vintages, but we have no concerns whatsoever about the new owners’ ability to take it even further.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 94/100 (Exceptional wine)

About the wine:

Juicy, fresh, and nicely structured, with rich aromas of plum and blackcurrant. Subtle notes of savory, tobacco, and cedar emerge on the finish, followed by a lingering, fragrant hint of black tea. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best enjoyed from 2024 to 2038.

James Suckling

James Suckling

Wine rated (2019 guide) 94-95/100

About the wine:

I don't recall ever tasting a Haut-Batailley this tannic, yet the tannins are flavorful and very ripe, displaying great beauty and purity. The wine is full-bodied, the tannins are well-integrated, and the finish is long and intense.

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2021 guide) 95/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is elegant, fresh, and beautifully refined, with a certain intensity. It reveals notes of vibrant black cherry and blackberry, along with lighter hints of blueberry, combined with touches of raspberry, as well as hints of blond tobacco, licorice, blue berries, subtle hints of star anise, and a very subtle hint of pepper. The palate is fruity, mineral, beautifully balanced, and full of elegance, offering freshness, lovely definition, finesse, and an almost ethereal quality in its approach. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy/juicy blackberry, juicy blackcurrant, and lighter hints of blueberries, combined with touches of raspberry, juicy plum, and violet, as well as hints of tobacco, nutmeg, a subtle hint of cardamom, iodine, and a very subtle hint of pepper. The tannins are elegant and well-integrated. Good length. A very subtle hint of caramelization on the finish/aftertaste.
